What: Borussia Dortmund vs PSG – Champions League matchday 6
Where: Signal Iduna Park
When: Wednesday, December 13th, kick-off 3 PM EST
The Champions League group stages finish up this week with matchday six. Over in Group F, which was deemed the Group of Death, first-place Borussia Dortmund will play host to French giants PSG at Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday. The kick-off is scheduled for 3 PM EST. BVB is at the top of the group with 10 points and has already booked their spot in the Round of 16, therefore this fixture doesn’t mean a whole lot. As for the Parisiens, they would solidify a berth in the knockout stages with a victory but could still go through without one depending on what Newcastle does against AC Milan. Below, find the Dortmund vs PSG picks.
PSG is a heavy favorite on Wednesday with moneyline odds of -113. The hosts return at +283. The total in goals meanwhile is set at three. These two sides locked horns on matchday one, with the Parisiens running out 2-0 winners on home soil behind goals from Kylian Mbappe and Achraf Hakimi.
Dortmund Cruising Into Last 16
It’s been a very respectable European campaign for the Black and Yellow, who have a 3-1-1 record heading into their final group game. Edin Terzic’s men have beaten AC Milan and Newcastle twice while tasting defeat to PSG and settling for a draw with the Rossoneri as well. However, Dortmund hasn’t exactly been lighting it up in the final third, bagging a mere six goals. On a more positive note, their backline has only conceded three times. No player has more than one goal in the competition, but Karim Adeyemi, Marco Reus, and Julian Brandt have all gotten in on the action.
On matchday five, BVB rolled into the San Siro and ran riot on Milan in a 3-1 victory. Reus opened the scoring before Samuel Chukwueze equalized but in the second half, the visitors scored twice more through Adeyemi and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. It was a very complete performance from Dortmund. As for domestically, the side isn’t thriving, sitting in fifth place and a whole 10 points off league leaders Bayer Leverkusen.
Things went downhill in a hurry on Saturday against RB Leipzig as Mats Hummels was sent off just 15 minutes in. While Dortmund ended up losing a 3-2 nailbiter, a defeat is a defeat. In fact, BVB is now winless in their last three outings, tying Leverkusen on December 3rd before getting knocked out of the DFB Cup mid-week against Stuttgart. The hosts aren’t exactly in the greatest of form at the moment, but thankfully, the outcome of Wednesday’s clash doesn’t matter.
Massive Game For PSG
A hot topic surrounding PSG over the last few years was their inability to make a deep run in the Champions League, especially when they had Neymar and Lionel Messi playing alongside Mbappe. Now, those two are gone and it’s just Mbappe, but still, they’re in danger of possibly making the Round of 16. Domestically, it’s always a cakewalk for Luis Enrique’s men. However, in Group F, things haven’t exactly turned out great. Paris owns a 2-1-2 record, taking seven points from five games.
To make matters worse, PSG has lost both of their matches in the UCL on the road. Last time out on matchday five at the end of November, the Parisiens played to a 1-1 draw with Newcastle, who could technically eliminate them from the competition with a win and a PSG defeat in Germany. That’s why it’s crucial Paris turns up and makes it happen at Signal Iduna. Mbappe is the leading man overall and of course in the Champions League, bagging three goals in five appearances. Youngster Warren Zaiire-Emery also has three assists.
Over in Ligue 1, PSG is six points clear in first place and just beat Nantes 2-1 on Saturday behind goals from Bradley Barcola and Randal Kolo Muani, who came on as a second-half substitute for Barcola. Honestly, it was refreshing to see someone other than Mbappe produce the goods up top. That being said, he will need to be firing on all cylinders if Paris is going to leave Germany with the full points on Wednesday.
Dortmund vs PSG Picks
I don’t see Dortmund rolling out a full-strength starting XI here given they’re already through. With that in mind, I’m liking the PSG moneyline.
