The winner of the Champions League and the winner of the Europa will lock horns on Wednesday, August 16th in the 2023 edition of the UEFA Super Cup as Manchester City and Sevilla travel to Greece to battle it out. The kick-off is scheduled for 3 PM ET at Karaiskakis Stadium, the home of Olympiacos. The Cityzens completed the treble in June when they beat Inter Milan 1-0 in the showpiece, lifting their first-ever UCL trophy. Sevilla meanwhile continued their dominance of the Europa League, winning their competition-best seventh title. Below, find the Manchester City vs Sevilla picks.
As you can see, the sportsbooks clearly expect City to win this fixture. They’re a massive -305 favorite at Bovada for an implied win probability of 75.31%. Sevilla comes back at +750 and has a mere 11.76% chance of coming out victorious here. These two sides have met four times over the years, with the Premier League giants winning all of them in the group stages of the Champions League.
Another Trophy For City?
Man City had the chance to win the Community Shield a couple of weeks ago but unfortunately lost to Arsenal in penalties. Regardless, the UCL holders have a clear opportunity to collect another piece of hardware Wednesday evening in Greece. This is their first appearance in the UEFA Super Cup and deservingly head in as a clear-cut favorite.
Pep Guardiola’s men started off the EPL campaign with a bang on Friday, running out 3-0 winners over newly promoted Burnley. Erling Haaland quickly opened his account with a beautiful goal within the first five minutes before completing the brace before the first half ended. Rodri added a third in the second half as well. City completely outplayed the Clarets and proved they haven’t missed a beat.
It’s difficult to imagine anyone beating the Sky Blues out for another title in 2023-24, both in England and Europe. Although the Super Cup isn’t a massive deal, you better believe Pep will be rolling out a strong starting XI with the hope of leaving Greece with some prestigious hardware. Plus, there is no shortage of motivation after missing out on the Community Shield title. That will give City even more desire to win the Super Cup. And to be brutally honest, the Cityzens are simply just a stronger side than Sevilla.
Sevilla a Regular in Super Cup
Sevilla has appeared in the Super Cup in five of the last 10 seasons but has only won it once in their history. That was way back in 2006, besting a star-studded Barcelona outfit. Nevertheless, the La Liga giants shouldn’t be taken for granted by City. Yes, they did finish 12th in the table last term which proved to be a massive disappointment, but manager Jose Luis Mendilibar made a big difference after taking over in April. He led the club to an impressive European triumph, beating Manchester United, Juventus, and lastly, Roma, in the final in Budapest after the two teams were tied 1-1 after 120 minutes.
That success in Europe’s second-best competition should have the Andalusians feeling confident for Wednesday, but there’s no question they know how difficult the task at hand really is. The Sky Blues beat Sevilla 4-0 and 3-1 in last year’s Champions League group stage.
When it comes to current form, Mendilibar’s squad isn’t exactly in the greatest shape. Valencia snatched three points from them on La Liga matchday one and Sevilla hasn’t even won once in their last six competitive games, losing three times and drawing three times. Financial turmoil this summer didn’t exactly leave a positive energy around the club, either. It’s difficult to imagine Sevilla is going to turn up and upset City, but anything is possible in a one-legged final like this.
Manchester City vs Sevilla Picks
A five-game losing skid in the Super Cup doesn’t exactly scream bet on Sevilla. If you’re really hoping to cash in Wednesday, the only pick is Man City. I expect them to convincingly cruise to victory in Greece and win this trophy for the first time in club history.
