The Match is taking this long-standing rivalry between two of golf’s greats to another level.
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will tee it up at 3 p.m. ET on Nov. 23, the Friday after Thanksgiving, in a whopping $9-million, winner-take-all showdown at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas.
Woods, arguably the greatest golfer of all time, is a prohibitive favorite (-250) to take yet another title and bragging rights from Mickelson (+175) in this pay-per-view event (odds provided by Bovada).
There are only two outcomes to bet on with the money line, but the payoffs are drastically different for each result in The Match.
A bettor would have to wager $250 to make a $100 profit on a Woods victory ($250 bet + $100 profit = $350 total return). A bettor would have to wager $100 on a Mickelson victory to earn a $175 profit ($100 bet + $175 profit = $275 total return).
The money line odds will continue to change right up to tee time, but your odds are fixed at the time of your bet.
Also, many proposition bets will be offered on this heavyweight bout.
Between these two superstars, they have won 19 majors — Woods (14), Mickelson (5) — and 123 PGA Tour tournaments — Woods (80), Mickelson (43). They are also the top two money earners all-time in golf, with Woods at $115 million and Mickelson at $88 million.
The Las Vegas event will not only feature the winner-take-all $9-million pot but also side challenges, including longest drive, closest to the pin and other bets.
Both players will donate some of the proceeds to charity, Golf Channel reported.
Fans hoping to walk alongside these golf titans will have to settle for a pay-per-view experience instead. No tickets will be sold to the public.
Both players seem to be on different “tours” of sorts this year.
Woods, who has had four major back surgeries, is playing — and winning — in front of packed houses in his comeback tour. Mickelson, who has struggled this year, especially in the last half of the season, may be on more of a farewell tour.
Tiger finished second in the PGA Championship at Bellerive in August, and then earned a celebrated victory in the Tour Championship in September at East Lake in Atlanta. It was his first victory in five years.
Woods also recorded Top 5 results at the British Open and the Quicken Loans National, while Mickelson hasn’t had a Top 10 showing since the Wells Fargo Championship back in May.
While these two were certainly fierce competitors and not the best of friends on tour, their relationship has softened in recent years. Woods, 42, and Mickelson, 48, are now playing practice rounds together and don’t hesitate to take shots at one another on social media.
