Tons of golfs fans will be rooting for Tiger Woods to have a strong showing at the 2023 Masters and win his sixth green jacket. The same can’t be said about Las Vegas sportsbooks, which would benefit from Woods struggling at Augusta National Golf Club. Because the legendary golfer is such a popular bet to win the Masters, Vegas sportsbooks need Tiger Woods to have a poor Masters performance.
Woods opened as a major long shot to win the 2023 Masters. While the betting odds still suggest that the 47-year-old is extremely unlikely to win the first major tournament of the year, Woods’ odds have improved amidst a large number of wagers. More money has been bet on Woods to win the Masters at the Westgate SuperBook than any other golfer in the field.
“His high point was 100-1. When he made the cut at Riviera (in February’s Genesis Invitational), he got as low as 40-1,” Westgate golf oddsmaker Jeff Sherman told The Las Vegas Review-Journal. “Now he’s played once in the last few months. Even when he made the cut at Riviera, his shots are there, but his walking issues are also still there.
“We’re talking about a very hilly course (at Augusta). For him to sustain that level for four days is still a very tall order.”
Woods tied for 45th place at The Genesis Invitational in February. It’s the only time that he’s competed in a PGA Tour event in 2023. Woods made one cut in 2022. He’s only won a pair of tournaments over the last decade.
When Woods had +10000 odds to win the Masters in December, one bettor placed a $2,000 wager on the 15-time major winner at the Westgate SuperBook according to the Review-Journal. If Woods somehow pulls off the unexpected victory, that bettor will earn a whopping $200,000 profit.
Tiger Woods prop bets for Las Vegas gamblers
Even the most ardent Tiger Woods fan would have to admit that the odds of Woods winning the Masters are slim. Thankfully for Las Vegas bettors, there are ways to make money on a strong Woods performance if he fails to win the green jacket. The SuperBook, for instance, allows bettors to wager on if Woods will make the cut at the Masters.
Woods has -180 odds to make the cut at the Masters. Woods’ odds to survive the first two days at Augusta opened at -150. Those odds briefly moved to -140 when bettors began to wager that the golfer would be finished after the first two rounds.
“We took some ‘Yes’ money after that,” Sherman said. “We’ve already seen a lot of action on the cut prop.”
Woods made the cut at the 2022 Masters less than 14 months after a car crash nearly ended his professional golf career. During what was his first PGA Tour event since the accident, Woods shot one-under 71 for the first round. A two-over 74 was good enough for Woods to continue playing Saturday. Woods ran out of steam in the final two rounds
The five-time Masters win limped towards the finish—literally and figuratively—with a seven-over par in each of the final two rounds. At 13-over, Woods tied for 47th place.
Can Tiger Woods win the 2023 Masters?
Woods’ odds to win the Masters have settled in at +6000. Those odds don’t accurately reflect how much of an upset it would be for Woods to win his 16th major. It was just two years ago that Woods almost lost his leg in a car crash. It’s an accomplishment for Woodsto be playing at the Masters at all.
If Woods finds a way to win the 2023 Masters, it would have to be considered among the greatest individual achievements in the history of professional sports. The golfer doesn’t know how many more times he’ll be able to compete at the Masters.
“I’m very lucky to have this leg; it’s mine,” Woods told reporters at Augusta Tuesday. “Yes, it has been altered and there’s some hardware in there, but it’s still mine. It has been tough and will always be tough. The ability and endurance of what my leg will do going forward will never be the same. I understand that. That’s why I can’t prepare and play as many tournaments as I like, but that’s my future, and that’s OK. I’m OK with that.”
In a world where Woods never required multiple surgeries on his right leg, winning the Masters would still be a historic achievement. Doing so would make him the oldest golfer to ever win the green jacket, breaking the record set by a 46-year-old Jack Nicklaus in 1986. Woods would become the second-oldest golfer to win a major. Phil Mickelson won the 2021 U.S. Open just a few weeks shy of his 51st birthday.
Among all of his career achievements, Woods’ 2019 Masters championship might be his most impressive. Can Woods win the Masters when the odds are even longer? He almost certainly can’t, but it will be fun to see him try.
