Come July 10, UFC fans all over the globe will be ready to tune into one hell of a showdown: Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor. These two of course are no strangers, as they’ve faced off twice before. So, in the third battle, which MMA superstar will be able to come out on top? In this piece, we offer up our McGregor vs. Poirier 3 futures picks. This is a bout no one is going to want to miss.
McGregor is the small favorite to take down Poirier in this one
In a truly close posting by the Las Vegas oddsmakers, McGregor is the small favorite to take down Poirier in this one. McGregor has been given -120 UFC Vegas odds, while Poirier is listed at -110. Yup, that tells you just how close this one could potentially be. Remember, McGregor and Poirier are no strangers to one another, as this will be the third time they’ve faced.
They’re quite familiar with one another. The last time the two entered the octagon together was back in June at UFC 257. In that battle, Poirier got the better of McGregor, taking him down with second-round knockout. The highlights of that TKO have been watched millions of times across the globe, as Poirier really stepped his game up for this fight to win it.
Now, in July, Poirier will look to try and silence a hungry McGregor. There’s no denying the Irishman has a huge ego. When he got TKOd in June, you already know it was a massive emotional blow for him. He was furious with the result and has been training overtime to try and bounce back from that defeat.
Come this summer, we’ll see if McGregor will be able to indeed bounce back and pull off a big victory. Will he be able to do so? We actually don’t think so, which is why we’re going to choose Poirier as our pick. He knows what it takes to beat McGregor and did so convincingly the last time they danced. With that confidence, he should be able to record the same result.
Look for Dustin Poirier to win in the second round
With us having our pick all set, look for Dustin Poirier to win in the second round. This is how he was able to get things done in their second matchup, which is what we think will be able to repeat itself as well in July for the third and most likely final meeting between the two.
The odds of Poirier winning in the second round have been set at +800, while him winning in the first round is +705. A third-round win is +900. What about McGregor? The entertaining fighter has odds as follows to win by round: first at +270, second at +700 and third at +1400. There’s also odds for the fourth and fifth rounds, but we don’t envision this fight lasting that long.
We do not think the fight will end in the first round, though. These fighters know each other’s styles so darn well, that the thought of everything ending early on just seems insane. If this was their first meeting and they didn’t know what to expect, then yeah, maybe a first-round TKO could potentially be in the cards. With it being the third fight, that changes everything.
With that said, we do like Poirier to win in the second round, just like how he was able to accomplish things in their last meeting. We also think it will come via a TKO. With McGregor far past his prime, look for Poirier to take advantage of that by wearing him down in the first round and then finishing the deal in the second round. Indeed, a second-round win for Poirier is our pick.
McGregor slammed Poirier on Twitter ahead of the fight
If you need any additional reason to be excited for this matchup, McGregor slammed Poirier on Twitter ahead of the fight. McGregor blasted Poirier ahead of their last matchup, saying he’d knock him out within 90 seconds. That wasn’t the case, though, as Poirier went on to win via a second-round knockout. It looks like McGregor hasn’t learned his lesson, though, as he once again took a verbal jab at his opponent.
“July 10th I will do this absolutely flawlessly,” McGregor wrote on his social media account. “We have these clowns sussed and fully! They wanna play a game of tactics? No problem, see you in there. You’ve awoken a beast. A beast with the backing of a much higher power! Say your prayers.”
As you can see, McGregor has no issues whatsoever talking plenty of smack. While he might be a small favorite as of this writing, he’ll never back down from a challenge. He’ll also be ready to prove all of his haters wrong. If you think he can do so, go ahead and fire him in as your pick, though we’d recommend going with Poirier.
