Can you believe it’s almost time for the final golf major of the year? So with all the action getting underway later this week, it’s time for our 2022 British Open Championship golf betting picks.
All the world’s top golfers are assembling in Scotland to take part in the 2022 Open Championship – even the breakaway LIV Golf rebels are in town.
St Andrews is the venue, where the famous Old Course (that’s the name of the 18 holes being used) will stage the 150th edition of the Open Championship.
The betting favorite with the top golf betting sites to win the 2022 British Open Championship is Rory McIlroy at +800.
The popular Northern Irishman is a good distance clear of the second favorite, Jon Rahm, who is +1400, and the American duo of Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele who are both +1600.
The conditions this week are supposed to be benign. The Open Championship can see the field hammered by the weather, with strong winds and rain often playing a large part in the event. This year that isn’t likely to be the case, although you can never trust the weather in the UK.
But benign conditions are what the players are generally used to playing on the PGA tour in the USA. So with McIlroy looking like the best player on the PGA Tour over recent weeks, he assumes the favorite tag. The latest British Open odds are below…

Without much form to speak of is Jon Rahm. The Spaniard started the year as the favorite to win all four majors. But such has been his indifferent form, he has slipped down the betting and even lost his world number one ranking to Scottie Scheffler.
The reason Rahm has come into the reckoning with the best online betting sites is that the lack of inclement weather, along with the wide-open fairways brings the big hitters into play.
And as one of the biggest drivers on the tour, Rahm’s name has to come up in the betting. The fact he’s so far behind McIlroy in the betting speaks volumes though.
Elsewhere, Scottie Scheffler’s form has dipped a bit lately, which is why he finds himself at +1600. While Xander Schauffele warmed up by winning last weekend’s Scottish Open, and in doing so saw himself catapulted into the betting favorites to win the Claret Jug.
This year’s event will be held at the legendary St Andrew’s in Scotland. The links course is known as the home of golf and in the United Kingdom, it is regarded as the venue where you want to win an Open Championship.
The Old Course is Par 72 and is 7,297 yards long. With the heatwave that the UK has been experiencing lately, the rough is not expected to come into play much. The wide-open fairways should also be very appealing for the big guns.
Officially known as just the Open Championship, the competition is called the British Open across this side of the water. The winner gets the Claret Jug, in what is the oldest golf major on the circuit, and also the only major not played in the USA.
Now, onto some 2022 British Open Betting Picks.
It’s impossible to ignore Rory in his current form. He’s had an excellent 2022 so far and in the past few weeks has started to look like the top golfer on the circuit. Some may dispute that, but in my eyes, he has been.
The downside is he hasn’t won a major since the 2014 PGA Championship. He also won this event earlier in the same year.
McIlroy is a touch short at +800, and I might be tempted to wait until the competition goes in-play and hopefully pick up a better price. If he starts like a train, the odds will disappear though. That is the risk you take.
If you are going to back him pre-competition, I would go easy at those odds.
At a far more appealing price is Jordan Spieth. Like McIlroy, it’s been too long since this guy last won a major. So, he could well be due one!
Spieth has a great Open Championship record. He won this event in 2017 and has also finished T4 in 2015, T9 in 2018, and 2nd last year. At +1800, Jordan Spieth is well worth a wager.
Finally, my outside bet to win is Tony Finau at +5000. Finau has had a great year so far in 2022. He is up to 9th in the world, his joint highest ever world ranking, thanks to his recent good form.
In recent weeks Finau has finished second behind McIlroy in the Canadian Open and also finished fourth at the Charles Schwab Challenge. At Vegas golf odds of +5000 I feel Finau is worth an outside bet. And you can even back him for a top 5 finish at +1200 if you feel he will just fall short of winning the competition.
