Ryan Blaney is in a familiar spot heading into Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Championship race in Phoenix. Last year, Blaney placed second at Homestead before winning in Martinsville. He then wrapped up the year with a second-place finish in Phoenix. This year, Blaney finished second at Homestead and won at Martinsville. He looks to improve on his 2023 runner-up finish in the final race of 2024. Blaney also placed second in Phoenix in 2022.
The driver of the No. 12 Ford for Team Penske, Blaney is the defending NASCAR Cup Series Champion. In his past seven starts in Phoenix, he has earned six top-fives and spent a series-best 322 laps in the lead. Despite his success on the track, Blaney has never secured a victory in Phoenix. He has placed second three times, third twice, and fourth twice. Blaney placed fifth in the spring race in Phoenix. He did not lead any laps during the March race.
William Byron has performed very well at Phoenix over the past few years, and he is among the betting favorites to pick up the win on the course in the final race of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season.
The driver of the No. 24 Chevy for Hendrick Motorsports, Byron won on this track in the spring of 2023 and finished in fourth place in the final race of the 2023 season. This year, Byron placed 18th in the spring race.
Blaney has not won since he captured the checkered flag in the spring race in Martinsville. If you’re keeping track, that would make Blaney winless in his past 27 starts. He has three runner-up finishes during that time.
Blaney has raced well as of late. In his past six starts, he has finished second, third (twice), fourth, and sixth (twice). Blaney has one of the best averaging starting positions in Phoenix at 4.7, and has led 186 laps on the course, with 95 of those coming in his fourth-place effort in last year’s final race. He led 64 laps in the race he won in early 2023.
Tyler Reddick’s win at Homestead earned him a spot in the final four of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Championship. Now, the driver of the No. 45 Toyota for 23XI Racing. The team is co-owned by Michael Jordan and has only been in the mix for four years.
Reddick performed well in the early going in the spring race in Phoenix, winning the opening stage and placing second in the next stage before finishing the race in 10th place. He led 68 laps of that race.
Reddick’s best finish on the track came when he placed third in the spring races in 2022 and 2023.
Reddick has decent odds in this race, but outside of his win in Martinsville, he has not finished inside the top 10 in his past eight starts, and six of his finishes have been 20th or lower. Reddick is, at best, a longshot to give Jordan and 23XI a win this weekend.
The five betting favorites to win this race have each won three times in 2024. Look for Ryan Blaney to pull away from that group and pick up his fourth win of the year and win the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Championship race this weekend, and also become the first back-to-back NASCAR Cup Series Champion since Jimmie Johnson won five straight between 2006 and 2010.
