The 2024 Tour de France kicks off on Saturday, June 29th, in Florence, Italy. The route takes riders eastward across Italy, then west into France and through the Alps. Over the course of 23 days, including 21 race days, the world’s top cyclists will cover 3,492 kilometers, traversing Italy, San Marino, and France, before concluding in Monaco.

A high-speed crash in the Itzulia Basque Country in April led to a severe incident involving several prominent riders as they navigated a descent through woodland. At a sharp right-hand turn, one cyclist lost control and slid off the road, causing multiple others to crash at high speed, with some ending up in unprotected concrete ditches and hitting rocks. This accident resulted in injuries for many of the top favorites for this year’s Tour de France, with Jonas Vingegaard, the 2022 and 2023 champion, being the most seriously injured. Vingegaard sustained a broken collarbone and several broken ribs, casting doubt on his participation. He has only just recovered in time to be on the starting line in Florence on June 29th.
This situation creates an opportunity for two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogačar, who is currently favored in the outright market at -175 with Everygame. Better value may be found in Primož Roglič at +800. Roglič recently claimed victory in the Critérium du Dauphiné, showcasing his form with an exciting final stage performance. Although he led after Saturday’s penultimate stage, he faced close competition heading into Sunday’s finale. The route of the 2024 Tour de France includes eight flat stages, four hilly stages, and seven mountain stages, with four summit finishes planned at Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d’Adet, Plateau de Beille, Isola 2000, and Col de la Couillole.
Riders will face an astounding 52,230 meters of vertical gain over the 21-day event. Due to the Paris Olympic Games, the race will not conclude on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Instead, it will start in Florence, Italy, and finish in Nice, France.
