This is a bet in the “out there” category: who’s going to have a roast next? As in a comedy session where he’s torn apart by his teammates and friends? This is an actual bet available right now. Keep reading and we’ll give you our expert pick on it!
The “roast” is undergoing a bit of a renaissance. Partly responsible for the rebirth is Tom Brady. Netflix paid him to have a roast comedy show earlier this year, and it attracted a host of guests — Ben Affleck, Bill Belichick, Rob Gronkowski, Kevin Hart, and Tony Hinchcliffe.
Speaking of Hinchcliffe, his “roast” of the entire country of Puerto Rico also made national news. He did it at a Donald Trump campaign rally, which of course, led to accusations of racism. The narrative was Puerto Ricans would backlash against the comments and vote for Kamala Harris, but that didn’t happen if polling is to be believed. Trump won handily and garnered plenty of Puerto Rican support.
But still, the Hinchcliffe incident cements our thesis: comedy roasts are in fashion again. This has been a staple of the American comedy scene since the 1960s thanks to a series of shows. It really picked up in the 2000s thanks to a Comedy Central show focused on doing so for big-name celebrities like Bruce Willis, Justin Bieber, Pam Anderson, and even Trump himself before he was a politician.
Thanks to the proliferation of streaming services, roasts have returned. They are cheap to produce — having to only pay the participating guests and a nice venue hall, not like a series or movie. Plus, they’re just flat-out entertaining. The Brady roast was an homage to the early 2000s with its no-holds-barred comedy style, the opposite of the “woke” culture we’ve become accustomed to. But let’s now get into what athletes could be next on the roasting block.
Athlete Roast Picks To Make And NOT Make
We’re going to have some fun with this one: we’ll be telling you who’s worth putting money on, but also who’s not. Deciding who to avoid can be just as important as picking correctly. With that said, here’s our athlete roast picks to make:
Do Bet Shaquille O’Neal
Shaq is a betting favorite in this category, and we think he’s worth pointing some money on. “The Diesel” is a big enough name to warrant a roast special from one of the big streamers as he’s been in the limelight for well over thirty years now.
But not just that, Shaq is comedic enough to make it a good show. He is funny himself, but more than that, his life has way, way too many moments to poke fun at — from the disaster that was Kazaam to his insatiable appetite for fame and small-statured women, and a whole lot more. Shaq is a no brainer bet here.
Save your money with LeBron. He’s the antithesis of Shaq in the fun department. Unlike Shaq, LeBron has worked miracles to preserve his squeaky-clean image for over 20 years (besides “The Decision” fiasco). All it takes is one roast to bring out the skeletons — something he probably doesn’t want. We’d be shocked if LeBron agrees to something like this anytime soon.
Do NOT Bet The Rock
Alright, this one was a hard choice. If you’re familiar with the Rock’s stint in WWE in the early 2000s, you know he has the comedy chops to make something like this wildly entertaining. But the question is, would he want to open his life up to criticism, even if it’s in a joking manner?
Our answer is no. Like LeBron, he’s another figure who’s tried to keep a clean image — and has mostly succeeded. The Rock isn’t as polarizing as many celebs of his level, and we’re guessing he wants to keep it that way. Pass on this bet too.
Do Bet Peyton Manning
What’s the saying, “anything you can do, I can do better?” That’s likely applies here with Manning and his long-time rival, Brady.
But here’s why we’re extra confident in this bet: Maning owns his own production company, Omaha Productions. There’s extra financial incentives for him to do this and raise the profile of the brand, plus get in bed with a big streamer. We’d throw a good-sized bet on Peyton. His odds are way too undervalued.
