While the Omnicron wave of COVID has come and gone, it has dampened the buzz of this awards show for the third year in a row. That being said, there was this feeling on Will Smith. His performance in “King Richard” was quite the impressive one and is a -500 favorite in some circles to win the award for Best Actor.

Again from book to book, the indication is that this feels like a two-actor race. The numbers keep gravitating to the side of Will Smith as the Oscars draw ever closer.

Benedict Cumberbatch and the Best Actor race have become a bit more interesting as his Oscar chances lessened a bit lately. Is that because of COVID? Or is it just the buzz from Will Smith? After all, Smith did win the two precursor awards to the Oscars. Some pundits feel it is inevitable that Cumberbatch does not have a chance in preventing a clean sweep for Smith.
However, Cumberbatch has been nominated for Best Lead Actor before. His first Oscars’ nod was for “The Imitation Game” (2014). The English actor did not win but some believe he almost did. Cumberbatch has won a BAFTA award and again has had nominations across the map from the big screen to the small screen. Being in “The Power Of The Dog” and one of 12 nominations for the film has to be of some help.
With the volatile role of Phil Burbank, Cumberbatch displayed somewhat of a balance in letting the other actors and actresses play along with their parts. It is what makes the ensemble movie what it is. “The Power Of The Dog” is not quite the typical sweeping Western. The formula may appear predictable but it is not. Cumberbatch plays this like a flamboyant poker player. He hides little and lets it fly even when it may not always be warranted.
Again, Cumberbatch has a way of pulling out reactions of the unexpected. The end of “The Power Of The Dog” makes one almost sympathetic to Phil Burbank. He never did get to give that lasso to Peter. It was that bond that gave the role a redeeming quality. Now, most books list Cumberbatch around +250 to +350. Here is the actor’s biggest plus number.
The rest of the nominees for Best Actor all have flaws. Here are some more top Vegas Picks and News. Is maybe Denzel Washington worth a long shot at +5000 for his role in “The Tragedy Of Macbeth”? Washington has been called one of the best actors of this generation.
Again, while Andrew Garfield and Javier Bardem were solid, they do not have the star power of Washington.
