As we transition toward the end of February, it is a great time to look at some Oscar Props. Some felt these numbers were going to change a bit more heading into March. After all, the awards show was not supposed to have the Grammy Awards around it. Then, there was an audible. It was announced that the Oscars would take place on March 27th – the Sunday before the Grammy’s.
While COVID numbers trend downward, that is good news. Now, the two Awards shows are quite close together. That being said, there was a feeling of inevitability with Jane Campion. Her film “The Power Of The Dog” became an Award circuit darling. It has been pure excellence and is a -750 favorite on most books to win Best Director.
The Oscar Props tell us that there is still some ways to go. By the way, there is now less than six weeks until the Oscar Awards Show takes place in Hollywood, California at the Dolby Theatre. That will likely not change many minds though. There is a huge and growing favorite and that is Jane Campion.
It really does depend on the sportsbook as far as the other choices. However, the 67 year old director was known for several film and even a TV Series before “The Power Of The Dog”. Sometimes these are often things that get forgotten. She helped co-create the series “Top Of The Lake” in 2013. All that being said, Campion is a creator first and foremost. She creates screenplays and creates vivid movies. That is why she was nominated for Best Director.
Now, what about those numbers for the top candidates in the Oscar Props for Album of the Year??
2022 Oscar Props - Best Director | ||
---|---|---|
The Nominees... | ||
Jane Campion - The Power of the Dog | -750 | -900 |
Steven Spielberg - West Side Story | +800 | +900 |
Keneth Brannagh - Belfast | +900 | +900 |
Ryusuke Hamaguchi - Drive My Car | +1400 | +1400 |
Paul Thomas Anderson - Licorice City | +1600 | +2000 |
Again from book to book, the indication is that this is becoming a one horse race. That focus is squarely on Jane Campion.
The top focus for the Oscar Award Props is on Jane Campion. Why? It is simple. There are 12 reasons actually. That’s right. “The Power Of The Dog” is up for 12 Oscar nominations. That is an accomplishment which is impressive. Also with Campion, online betting sites like Bovada have been heavily on her for the past month. That may not change either.
Another piece of good news is that Rodrigo is likely to take home some hardware no matter what happens on Sunday, March 27th in Hollywood. One of the Oscar Award categories she expects to win is for Best Picture. The expectation is that there will be some resistance as the category sets up for a pairing. As a matter of fact, one can pair the Oscar props and an NHL bet by looking at some NHL Vegas Odds too.
Besides that, Campion’s film is even up for Best Adapted Screenplay. It is likely Campion faces a stiffer battle here against the films Dune and even Drive My Car among others. Campion once won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay via “The Piano” (1993). Campion makes it possible that she could bring home enough hardware to need an entire extra trophy case.
If that was not enough, Campion’s odds tilted toward -225 and shortening for Best Picture. That number will shorten some more much like it will for Best Adapted Screenplay. At this point, it would not be a surprise if Campion takes home all three awards. Simply, this film trends toward become a locomotive of sorts.
The New Zealand native is our favorite to win the Oscar Props for Best Director.
Steven Spielberg and the Best Director race have become a bit less compelling over the past month. When all the nominations came out. “West Side Story” did manage seven nominations in all including Best Director and Best Picture. This was Spielberg’s 12th film that received a nod for Best Picture and the seventh time he was listed as a contender for Best Director.
Now, Spielberg has won the Best Director Oscar before. The acclaimed director won it twice. Once, was for Schindler’s List in 1993 and then Saving Private Ryan in 1998. Schindler’s List was the juggernaut film that swept many categories including Best Picture. So, Spielberg is 2 for 6 when it comes to the Best Director Oscar and only 1 for 10 individually at Best Picture. To be nominated that many times is incredible in of itself.
With so many other categories garnering serious competition, this will be an interesting come March 27th. The feeling is that Spielberg might surprise in the Best Director category. Might. The likelihood is that Jane Campion sweeps all three of her major nominations. However, Spielberg is just enough of a long shot to at least take a flier on here.
So, most books list Spielberg right around +800 to +900. Here is the director’s biggest plus-number.
The rest of the nominees for Best Director choices all may have little chance on March 27th. Here is some nice best Vegas news articles along the way. Is maybe Kenneth Branagh (+800 to +900) worth a shot? At the very least, Branagh was nominated for Best Director way back in 1989 for Henry V. Perhaps, if the director of “Dune” had been nominated, but that didn’t happen.
The wildcard is still Spielberg right now. based on name recognition, clout, and number of award nominations.
If there is a long shot of sorts, it may be Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice City” but that buzz has faded because of Campion’s shortening numbers. That being said, he is listed at +2000.
