The 2023 Formula 1 season is now into its European leg of the season. There is a brief trip to Canada for Round 9, but after that it’s Europe all the way with six successive races on the continent.
This is the time of the season we expect to see Max Verstappen come into his own. He already has a lead at the top of the championship, and we believe he will only continue to pull further away over the next few weeks.
Verstappen beginning to dominate
Max Verstappen was the winner of Round 8 in Monaco last weekend. The double-world champion backed up his win in Miami with another superb drive on the Monte Carlo street circuit. The win sees him open up a lead of 39 points at the top of the drivers championship.
As a result, all the talk of Sergio Perez challenging his teammate for this season’s championship seems to have disappeared. Perez is renowned for his performances on street circuits, so the two races in Miami and Monaco were his chance to really put Verstappen under pressure.
In the end it was Max Verstappen that won both races. And now, unless Perez can start producing the goods on the more traditional European circuits, it looks like the Dutchman will make it three world championships in a row.
The bookmakers certainly think that he will. They have now cut Max Verstappen to -1600 to win this season’s drivers championship. He was -1000 heading into the Miami Grand Prix. But after back-to-back wins, Verstappen has been further trimmed in the betting.
In the betting to win the world championship without Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez has seen his odds drift. He was -700 heading into the Monaco Grand Prix. After his disappointing showing in Monte Carlo, he is now -500.
Fernando Alonso is the driver moving in the right direction. His magnificent second place finish at Monaco has seen the bookmakers cut his odds from +1000 to +700.
Betting to win the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix
Normal service has resumed in the world of Formula 1 betting for the Spanish Grand Prix. Max Verstappen is the favorite at -240, which is more the sort of price we’re used to seeing. Last weekend in Monte Carlo, Verstappen was +115.
Seeing the Red Bull driver at odds against is unheard of these days. And unfortunately, after his win in Monaco, we’re unlikely to see it again anytime soon.
Elsewhere, the Las Vegas odds setters have made Sergio Perez second favorite at +450. He was +350 at the start of the week, but his odds have been drifting since. It seems like Formula 1 punters are starting to oppose the Mexican.
After his highest finish in nine years last Sunday, Fernando Alonso has been installed as third favorite with the best Las Vegas sportsbooks. The Aston Martin driver finished second behind Verstappen last Sunday, and he is priced up at +900 to go one better in Catalunya.
In last year’s Spanish Grand Prix, Max Verstappen headed up a 1-2 finish for Red Bull. His teammate Sergio Perez was second, and he also claimed the fastest lap of the day. Third on the podium was George Russell, and Charles Leclerc claimed Pole Position.
There’s a pretty good chance that the top two on the podium could be the same two drivers this year. So for our main betting pick, we’re going with a win for Max Verstappen. Okay, so he’s very short at -240, but we just don’t see any other outcome in the race.
Verstappen seems to have stamped his authority all over the drivers championship in the last two races. And with the Dutchman not finishing outside of the top two all season, we’re making Max Verstappen our pick to win the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix.
For anybody out there not wanting to back Verstappen to win at those odds, we get it. Therefore, we’re making a couple of back up picks that you can bet on instead if that’s what you prefer.
First up, the fastest lap. Sergio Perez has the car, and he has the speed. He also claimed the fastest lap here last season. The favorite in the betting for the fastest lap is Verstappen at +150, followed by Alonso at +400, and Perez at +450. Sergio Perez looks a good value bet and we’re making him our pick for the fastest lap.
Another bet we like the look of is for a Mercedes car to finish ahead of a Ferrari. Mercedes are -130, with Ferrari at +100. We’re backing Mercedes to finish higher than Ferrari at -130 for our final 2023 Spanish Grand Prix betting pick.
MercedesTo finish ahead of Ferrari at Spanish Grand Prix
