The winner in 2023 was Max Verstappen. The current championship leader has only won the British Grand Prix once. But he does have two wins at this venue, having also won the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix race, held here in 2020.

After the shenanigans in Austria last Sunday, are we going to see more fireworks at the British Grand Prix between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris?
The rivalry has been simmering for a few weeks now. But at the Austrian Grand Prix, it finally boiled over, with a coming together following repeated attempts by Norris to overtake Verstappen in the closing laps of the race.
The resulting collision knocked them both out of the two leading positions, allowing George Russell to pick up the pieces and win the race. But it’s Norris who seems to be the most hard done to driver. As a result of the crash, he didn’t manage to finish the race and ended up out of the points.
Norris later accused Verstappen of going too far in his efforts to defend his race lead.
At Silverstone, Norris will have the crowd behind him. The young Brit can feel aggrieved by failing to finish the race at the Red Bull Ring after his collision with Verstappen.
His DNF, along with Verstappen’s fifth place, has seen him fall further behind in the 2024 drivers’ championship. Max Verstappen has 237 points. Norris remains on 156.
Neither driver looks like backing down
The main takeaway from last Sunday’s coming together is that Verstappen isn’t just going to move aside and let Norris through. The Dutchman hasn’t won three world championships by doing that, and he’s not about to start now.
But we also learned that Norris isn’t going to take a backward step as well. His car is now able to complete the Red Bull. It’s surely only a matter of time before the Brit learns how to get the better of the champion.
Max Verstappen has had plenty of practice battling it out in the past. He went toe-to-toe with Lewis Hamilton in 2021. He is battle-hardened. Norris is new to this, but he will learn.
Betting to win the 2024 Drivers’ Championship
Such is the competitiveness of the McLaren car, the betting to win the 2024 Drivers’ Championship is still a live betting market.
In 2022 and 2023, the market was already done and dusted by this stage of the season. Verstappen was already long gone and no one could get near him.
In 2024, we seem to have a genuine championship race on our hands. Max Verstappen is still way out in front at -1400. But he looks vulnerable and it wouldn’t be a wise move to wager on him at those odds. Lando Norris is +800.
In the 2023 British Grand Prix, Norris finished second and Piastri fourth, in what was a breakthrough weekend for McLaren.
Since then McLaren has steadily improved and is now a match for Red Bull.
Can they get the better of Red Bull this weekend in what is McLaren’s home race? We say they can. So we are again opposing Max Verstappen.
Verstappen is -170 to win. The rest of the field is +140. We are backing the rest of the field to beat Verstappen for our British Grand Prix betting pick.
