Verstappen cashes in on McLaren slip
After his frustrations in Monaco, Max Verstappen returned to the top of the podium with a win at the Canadian Grand Prix.
The victory was his sixth of the season, and the triple-world champion now has a 56-point lead over second-placed Charles Leclerc at the top of the Drivers’ Championship.
The win may have been Verstappen’s sixth of the season, but it was only his second in his last four races. The current F1 season is far different from what we’ve witnessed over the past two years. Despite this, Verstappen is now -2000 to win the F1 Drivers’ Championship again this season, having been -1200 before the race in Canada.
Ironically, Verstappen’s Canadian GP win was largely down to a bad call by McLaren, who left Lando Norris out on the Montreal circuit while the safety car was in operation.
Rather than waiting like McLaren, Red Bull boxed Verstappen immediately for a tire change. McLaren left Lando Norris – who had been leading the race – out on the track, only to see him rejoin the race in third place after they eventually decided to call him into the pits a couple of laps later.
Norris originally put it down to bad luck. But he has since come out and stated he believed it was a mistake by the team that cost him the race. He is probably correct.
Ferrari set back in Montreal
Elsewhere, Ferrari failed to back up their impressive showing at Monaco.
The Prancing Horse team had a shocker with both drivers recording DNFs. And to add insult to injury for Leclerc, he suffered the indignity of having to move out of the way for the race leaders to lap him ahead of his eventual retirement.
One team that did have a better weekend in Canada than expected was Mercedes. George Russell started the race in pole position and finished on the podium in third place, one place ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton in fourth.
Any optimism of a Mercedes revival may have to be put on hold as the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is not expected to suit their car. But overall, Russell and Hamilton can take some confidence into the remainder of the season after their best weekend of the campaign, to date.
Betting to win the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix
Max Verstappen was -150 to win the Monaco Grand Prix. He was -200 to win in Canada, and this weekend Verstappen is slated at -225 to win the Spanish Grand Prix.
As you would expect, Lando Norris (+500) and Charles Leclerc (+750) are his closest betting rivals.
Following on from the leading three favorites is Carlos Sainz at +2000. The Spaniard is followed by George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, and Oscar Piastri at +2500. Sergio Perez is +2800 and Fernando Alonso is +10000.
After setting the record for continuous pole positions (eight), Max Verstappen has gone two races without claiming the top spot on the starting grid. Charles Leclerc was first on the grid in Monaco, and George Russell led the way in Canada.
After their debacle in Canada, Ferrari is expected to rush through their latest upgrades in time for Spain. If they manage it, might Leclerc and Sainz be good value picks for the pole position?
Charles Leclerc is +900 to be in pole position, and Carlos Sainz is +1600. We say they are both good value bets and are backing both in our F1 betting picks to be in pole position.
The Ferrari upgrades may be enough to see them win the race. That is a possibility. But we are still not convinced by Ferrari at times.
Furthermore, despite Leclerc sitting seven points ahead of Lando Norris in the points table, it’s still hard to argue that the Monégasque driver and his Ferrari team are more consistent than Lando Norris and McLaren.
Norris was second in Canada, fourth in Monaco, second in Italy (Emilia Romagna), first in Miami, and second in China. You know Norris is going to deliver a solid consistent performance any week.
We say that makes Norris a better bet than either of the Ferraris. Lando Norris is our betting pick to win the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix at +500.
