What: Tottenham vs Liverpool – Premier League Matchday 7
Where: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
When: Saturday, September 30th
We’re just days away from matchday seven of the 2023-24 Premier League campaign. Arguably, the most tantalizing fixture of the lot will feature Tottenham playing host to rivals Liverpool in North London at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The kick-off is scheduled for 12:30 PM ET. Spurs are in fine form and just settled for a 2-2 draw with Arsenal over the weekend thanks to James Maddison and Heung-min Son. As for the Reds, they’re still unbeaten as well and just hammered Liverpool 3-1. This is the first meeting of the term between the two sides. Keep reading for the Tottenham vs Liverpool picks.
There’s really no clear favorite here. Tottenham comes in at +185 odds, while Liverpool sits at +120. A draw is priced at +310. However, based on recent meetings, the Merseysiders should probably be a bigger favorite. They’re unbeaten in 12 games across all competitions against Spurs, winning nine and drawing three times. In 2022-23, the Reds completed the double, notching 2-1 and 4-3 victories both home and away.
Impressive Start For Spurs
After losing their talisman Harry Kane, there weren’t very high expectations for Tottenham. And while it’s still very early in the season, the North Londoners have shown well thus far. James Maddison has proven to be the signing of the summer in the Premier League, playing an integral part in the side’s success, assisting both goals over the weekend while Heung-min Son netted a brace.
This was a rather even match with Arsenal, with both teams exchanging blows. Tottenham managed to stay composed and capitalized off a Gunners mistake for the equalizer as Maddison made an impressive run before putting the football on a platter for Son.
With the lone point, that’s now a 4-2-0 record for Ange Postcoglou’s men, grabbing wins over Manchester United, Bournemouth, Burnley, and Sheffield. That has them in fourth place at the moment. Son is leading the way up top with three goals, while Maddison has two assists. Overall, Spurs have bagged 15 goals in six outings and conceded just seven times. Respectable.
However, Saturday presents the Lilywhites’ most difficult test yet. Liverpool is as dominant as can be against them. Tottenham’s last win over the Merseysiders was way back in 2017. But considering their form, the confidence will be high about finding a positive result. Even a point would be deemed a success.
Title Contender Liverpool?
Okay, maybe not. Manchester City is clearly in a league of its own, but Liverpool is making an early case for being in the Premier League title race. Jurgen Klopp’s group is just two points behind the Cityzens, collecting 16 points from six games for a 5-1-0 record. The goals are flowing with 15 while allowing a mere five. That’s a far cry from last season, where the backline struggled immensely.
The Reds ripped apart West Ham on matchday six, with Mo Salah opening the scoring from the spot in the 16th minute. Although the Hammers did equalize just before halftime, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota put Liverpool ahead for good with goals of their own in the second period.
What’s been most impressive about the Merseysiders is the contributions from their entire attack. Salah has three goals and four assists, while Nunez has three goals as well. Jota and Luis Diaz, meanwhile, have hit the back of the net twice. No matter who Klopp selects, this a daunting frontline that can create havoc amongst the best of them. There’s also Cody Gakpo, too. There are tons of options for Liverpool, and they’re all producing the goods.
When it comes to playing Spurs, the unbeaten streak is evident. That being said, most of these encounters were decided by just one goal. Liverpool must be sharp because one mistake can be the difference in taking home three points or just one. And to be frank, City looks unstoppable, so dropping any points isn’t ideal if they want to remain in the mix at the top of the table.
Tottenham vs Liverpool Picks
I love how both of these clubs are playing, and that leads me to believe they will share the spoils on matchday seven.
