Ace Impact is the likely favorite for the Arc, though he is about as untested as a favorite in such a major race can be. He is undefeated in five starts, including in the Prix du Jockey Club (G1) two starts back, though he has yet to face older horses or to stretch past 10 ½ furlongs. He handled good ground well enough in the French Derby to have a chance to handle it again this time, but with serious things to prove he is underlaid as the favorite.
At age six, Hukum is as good as ever. He comes into the Arc on a three-win streak, including a head victory last out in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (G1) at Ascot on July 29. He has freshened since then but can run well off a similar break. And, both his tactical speed and his aptitude over the distance should prove helpful.
Westover missed by just a head to Hukum, in the King George, a testament to both his good current form and his ability to handle this distance. Though he ran sixth in the Arc last year, the better ground this time around should suit him well and lead to a better result. He is tactical enough to handle the likely modest pace and has been a consistent top-level presence this year.
Simca Mille is an interesting German runner with a two-way appeal. He does his best work at this mile-and-a-half trip, and he has the tactical speed to work out a good trip, given the likely modest pace. The good ground should suit him well. And he is already a proven shipper: he came out to Longchamp last year and won the Prix Niel (G2).
Through Seven Seas is the lone shipper from Japan. She was last seen finishing second behind Equinox in the Takarazuka Kinen (G1) at Hanshin. Equinox is perhaps the best turf horse in the world and would be a favorite or close to it in this spot. Though she ran off the board in her only try at 2400 meters (about 1 ½ miles), that was over two years ago and she is a better horse now.
