Teams and Format
13 of the best men’s teams from around the world will compete at the event, having qualified through their performances in the Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships, or at the inaugural Pan Continental Curling Championships, held in Calgary, Canada in November 2022.
The event will begin with a 12-game round-robin stage where each team will play against the others once. After the round-robin phase, the top six teams will advance to the playoffs.
The teams that finish first and second will automatically move on to the semi-finals, while the third to sixth-ranked teams will compete in qualification games for the semi-finals.
In the qualification games, the third-ranked team will face the sixth-ranked team, and the fourth and fifth-ranked teams will compete against each other. The winners of these games will advance to the semi-finals.
The two teams that emerge victorious in the semi-finals will then compete in the final to vie for the world title, while the other two teams will compete for the bronze medal.
If any ties should emerge for the playoff spots, no tiebreakers will be played. Instead, the head-to-head results will determine the outcome. if the tie is still not resolved, the pre-game Last Shot Draw distances will be used.
Contenders
Sweden
Last year, the World Men’s Curling Championship was held at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, where Sweden emerged victorious over Canada with a score of 8-6 in the final.
The victory marked Sweden’s fourth consecutive world title. Sweden became the first curling team to secure both the Olympic and World Titles in the same year.
Skipper Niklas Edin, is making his 12th appearance for the Swedish team. Edin has led the team to six world titles and is a primary reason the Swedish team is the favorite this year with +225 odds.
SwedenTo Win 2023 Men’s World Curling Championship
Canada has been the runner-up to Sweden in three out of the four years that the Swedish team has won the World Championship.
Brad Gushue, the skipper of the Canadian team, led them to victory in the Men’s World Curling Championship back in 2017.
This feels like a golden opportunity for Canada to take advantage of the home ice and previous experience in the arena. Understandably, they have the second-best odds at +300.
CanadaTo Win 2023 Men’s World Curling Championship
The United States curling team, skipped by John Shuster, is making a tenth appearance at this level. The team just missed out on a medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics, finishing in fourth.
They’ll be looking to recapture some of their past glory, with three members of this team winning Olympic gold medals in 2018 in Korea.
I would have to advise passing on betting on the US team to win gold with the fifth-best odds of +1400.
