Some of the top three-year-olds in Canada will line up Sunday, October 2, at Woodbine Racetrack for the third jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown: the Breeders’ Stakes.
One of Canada’s most intriguing betting horse races, the one ½-mile turf race is open to Canadian-bred sophomores and features a $400,000 purse. Its headliners include Prince of Wales winner Duke of Love, Queen’s Plate placegetters Hall of Dreams, and Sir for Sure.
The history of the Breeders’ Stakes stretches back to 1889. It is the third race of the Canadian Triple Crown, following the Queen’s Plate on Tapeta and the Prince of Wales on dirt. It is the longest of the three races, as well. Throughout its history, stars like Overskate, With Approval, Izvestia, Dance Smartly, Chief Bearhart, and Channel Maker have won the Breeders’.

Dancin in Da’nile has yet to win on the grass. But, his three-back allowance race (his only try on firm turf) was a close third against older horses — and that came in his first start off a seven-and-a-half-month layoff! With tactical speed and a deep distance pedigree, he has every right to improve under Rafael Hernandez, who knows how to ride the Woodbine turf and anyone.
Gaston faces winners for the first time but looks attractively placed for high-powered owners and the high-profile Kevin Attard barn. He has moved forward in his last two starts as he added blinkers, switched to grass, and stretched out. He has tactical versatility, and his pedigree is replete with stamina, meaning he can get a good trip and has a chance to see it all out.
Sir for Sure lost his rider last out in the Prince of Wales but ran a good third in the Queen’s Plate two starts back and won the Plate Trial smartly before that. Though he has yet to try grass, he has a good pedigree for the turf on both sides and enough stamina to make the step up to a mile and a half interesting.
Hall of Dreams, Sir for Sure’s stablemate in the Mark Casse barn, has closed for shares in both the Plate Trial and the Queen’s Plate. He rarely fires a clunker and has grown some rapport with top-flight jockey Patrick Husbands. He may be overbet, especially on the faulty idea that some bettors have that the deep closers will just want more ground. But, it wouldn’t be a huge shock for him to clunk along for a piece underneath.
Lac Macaza took a nice step forward on September 10, first off of a freshening, and put on grass for the first time. Sent off a 26-1 long shot in a listed race, he finished well to be fourth, beaten half a length for the whole thing. Now he drops in class to face Canadian-breds. His pedigree intrigues for the step up in the distance, his back races suggest he does not have to sit that far off the pace, and his trainer Julia Carey is having an excellent Woodbine meet with limited starters.
