Working their way through six rounds of racing which began on Oct. 18, the Irish Greyhound Derby is as much about attrition as it is about pure speed. To be the top dog, these greyhounds must be bringing their A game to the track on six successive weekends if they want that exclusive title.
This event was first held at Harold’s Cross in 1928. The Irish Greyhound Derby is the premier greyhound racing competiton in Ireland. Alongside the English Greyhound Derby, it is considered among the two biggest events on the calendar for the UK and Ireland greyhound racing industries.
Let’s look at the top contenders to take home this year’s Irish Greyhound Derby championship.
Bockos Diamond is a perfect 10-for-10 this year. This dynamic greyhound has won five times from Box 6 and three times from Box 5, so the starting assignment has played no role in the dog’s success story. He is carrying the shortest price for a favorite entering the quarter final stage of this event in many a year.
On top of that, Graham Holland, the Tipperary-based trainer of Bockos Diamond, is a three-time winner of this race. He sent out Irish Greyhound Derby winners Rural Hawaii (2016), Lenson Bocko (2019) and Newinn Taylor (2020). So if you’re someone who likes to bet trends, a Holland-trained dog has won this race during each of the past two US Presidential election years.
Bombay Pat is the +200 betting choice to win the first heat of Saturday’s quarter finals. He’s another Holland trainee and is owned by Pat Muldoon.
Bombay Pat was sired by Pestana, whose Shelbourne Park track record was shattered on Saturday by Bockos Diamond.
A winner of two in a row and four of six starts, Cheap Sandwiches has hit the board in nine of his last 10 starts. The -150 odds-on favorite in heat two of Saturday’s quarter finals, Cheap Sandwiches is yet another contender from the Holland kennel.
This Liam Dowling trainee is a winner of seven of his last 11 starts. However, De Lahdedah has recorded just one win in three Irish Greyhound Derby starts. The son of 2019 race winner Lenson Bocko barely survived through to the quarter finals. De Lahdedah was third in his third-round heat. Dowling won this race in 2015 with Ballymac Matt.
The lone English invader among the race’s top contenders, March On Freddie faces a tough draw in his quarter final heat. The 3-1 co-third betting choice, March On Freddie has drawn in with De Lahdedah and Bombay Pat. His second place finish in the third round heats brought to a halt a seven-race win streak for March On Freddie.
Ballinabola Jim (+2500) remains unbeaten in this year’s derby. He cruised to victory in 29.39 for trainer Brendan P. Murphy in the fifth of six third-round heats. He’s won seven starts in a row and nine of 10 races overall.
Carrick Aldo (+2800) was an impressive second behind the track mark of Bockos Diamond during Saturday’s third-round heats. He’s 3-1-1 in his last five starts and posted a seven-race win streak earlier this year.
How do you bet against perfection? Ten times in the box. Ten victories for Bockos Diamond.
Add to the dog’s pedigree the success in this race for his trainer. It simply looks to be a winning combination that’s going to be tough to beat.
