His double in Japan gave Bagnaia his eighth win of the 2024 campaign. That made him the fifth rider in MotoGP history to win at least eight races in a single season.
Bagnaia ended a personal four-race drought without a victory. Prior to that slump, he’d looked almost unbeatable. The Italian rode to victory in five of the previous six races.
The race for the MotoGP world title is as close as it’s been in several weeks. With Bagnaia sitting just 10 points back, the steadiness that Martin has been displaying all season long is going to get the ultimate test in final four races of the season.
In Japan, the Spaniard battled from 11th place to get up to second, but he found himself staring at Bagnaia’s back, unable to find a way past the Italian. Martin has only won once over the past 11 races. However, his runner-up performance in Japan marked the seventh time over those 11 races that he’d finished second.
Neither Martin or Bagnaia are showing an Australian Grand Prix win on their respective resumes. On the other hand, the legend that is Marquez has won this race three times.
Marquez finished third in Japan. That was his fifth podium finish over the past eight races. However, his last win Down Under came in 2019.
A late push got the Italian rider and Bagnaia’s teammate with Ducati Lenovo up to fourth place. Unfortunately, his inability to crack through for a podium finish is leaving Bastianini’s title hopes on life support.
Coupled with his retirement from the previous race at the Indonesian Grand Prix due to an accident on Lap 20, Bastianini’s inconsistent performances make him a difficult rider to bet. He has won twice over the past seven races, but Bastianini has never won the Australian Grand Prix.
Martin is still the betting choice to win his first MotoGP series championship and bring an end to Bagnaia’s two-year reign as champion. However, the gap between the two riders is razor thin.
With four races to go in the season, oddsmakers are setting Martin as the -125 odds-on chalk to be MotoGP champion. Bagnaia, though, is an even-money pick as the second betting choice. With 37 points up for grabs at each of the four remaining stops on the circuit, this remains either rider’s race to win.
Both Marquez and Bastianini remain with a mathematical chance of winning the title. However, the fact that both are set with betting lines of +6000 tells you how unlikely their championship dreams are of coming true.
The only thing we can say with a fair degree of certainty is that a Ducati will be winning the Australian Grand Prix. Ducati riders have won 13 MotoGP races in a row this season. Ducatis again swept the podium in Japan.
Martin has proven to be the picture of consistency this season. But he may be required to take some chances in the stretch drive to the season’s finish line if he wants to win his first title.
Bagnaia is a proud champion, which he displayed succinctly in Japan. He’s right back in the chase after a rough month of racing. It’s hard to bet against someone who knows how to get it done and is hungry to do it once more.
