The average punter may wonder what all the fuss is about with classified documents. All world leaders must handle them on a daily basis, so what’s the big deal if someone takes one home?
Well in the US, it is a big issue. According to the National Archives, classified national security documents are information that would damage national security if improperly released. The information has three categories, Top-Secret, Secret, and Confidential. Restricted, became an obsolete category in 1953.
But these documents can include details about nuclear weapons, or information on friendly nations and enemies. There is also an element of trust at stake. Security services all around the world cooperate with the United States. So the last thing that US security services need is other nations not trusting them with sensitive material.
So the handling of these documents is extremely important. We’ve all heard stories of documents being left on trains or in the back of taxi cabs, and accidents do happen. But as frustrating as those accidents may be, trying to explain away the mishandling of classified documents by a President, or Vice-President, is a completely different issue altogether.
The chances are most previous Presidents and Vice-Presidents may have inadvertently mishandled documents at some stage. And now with it coming under the microscope more, it seems to be only a matter of time before someone else is found to have erred.

The pair are followed by George W Bush and Barack Obama at +425. All have been in office in the last 30 years, so you can see where this is going.
The key to this bet is not deciding who has the classified documents. But who is more likely to be caught?
Some of the documents Biden is alleged to have mishandled relate to his time as Barack Obama’s Vice-President. Does this make Obama a good bet to also be caught? Or is Obama too slick to be found out?
One thing for sure is that Obama has to have the biggest target on his back. Finding Bill Clinton had not followed the rules would be no great surprise. Both he and his wife have been involved in enough scandals over the years. So unearthing another Clinton scandal would be as beneficial as finding another one about Trump. No one would be shocked.
Obama is a different issue. If he can be discredited, it would be the dream outcome for the Republican Party. Along with his wife, Michelle, the Obamas are still big players. And with his association with Joe Biden, finding dirt on either would be huge news.
So with no shortage of investigators trying to catch the 44th President, we make Barack Obama our first pick to be the next President or VP to be found in possession of classified documents.
It stands to reason that the name of George W Bush will also enter the conversation. We’ve all seen the stories about him not being the sharpest tool in the box, and his reputation for being a bit slow on the uptake seems to go before him. Rightly or wrongly.
We’re not convinced claiming the scalp of George W Bush would be the silver bullet that Democrats are looking for. Given his reputation, would anybody be hugely surprised if he was caught? But if we know anything, we know that if players are out there trying to catch Trump, Biden, Pence, Obama, etc. then there will be people after the likes of Bush as well.
