The women’s curling at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics starts today, and it promises to be a fierce competition with Sweden and Canada looking for the teams to beat.
Team USA is in the mix, although they aren’t one of the betting favorites with the best Vegas sportsbooks.
But with a lot of strong teams likely to be beating each other in the round-robin stage, Tabitha Peterson’s USA team could find a route through to the semi-final, and from there, anything could happen.
2022 Beijing Olympics; Women’s Curling Format
There are 10 nations competing at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in women’s curling.
The ten nations competing are:-
Canada
Sweden
Great Britain
Switzerland
Japan
USA
South Korea
ROC
China
Denmark
The nations will play each other in a round-robin format, with the top 4 qualifying for the semi-finals.
The winners of the semi-finals proceed to the final, with the two losers playing off in a third-place play-off for the bronze medal.
If any teams finish level on wins in the round-robin table, the team that won the head-to-head match between the two-level teams in the round-robin takes the higher position.
The round-robin stage starts today, February 10th, and finishes on February 17th. The playoffs schedule is:-
Team Canada is highly experienced, with three of Team Jones having won gold in the 2014 Sochi games.
That was eight years ago, but despite this, the bookmakers still make the Canadian quintet led by Jennifer Jones their betting favorites for gold.
Skip: Jennifer Jones
Third: Kaitlyn Lawes
Second: Jocelyn Peterman
Lead: Dawn McEwen
Alternate: Lisa Weagle
There is a lot of pressure on these girls though. Curling is a major sport in Canada, and it’s a source of national embarrassment for the nation not to bring a medal of summer color home.
And that’s exactly what happened to Rachel Homan and her girls in Pyeongchang.
Yes, national pride was restored by Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris winning the 2018 mixed curling gold medal, but the nation still expects more from its men’s and women’s respective teams.
I think they have a chance, but rather than backing them to win, I’m making Team Canada to finish in the medals of the women’s curling my betting pick.
