The last three games between Detroit and Ottawa went under. However, the total hit on the over in the previous four meetings. Four of Detroit’s last six home games also went over. The over is also 4-1 in the club’s last five games. Five of the last seven games played by the Red Wings against Eastern Conference opponents also recorded an over on the total.
On the flip side, the under has hit in seven of Ottawa’s past 10 games. The Senators slate is also showing that six of their last nine road games and four of their past five clashes with Eastern Conference teams went under.
Detroit is 13-16-3 SU as a betting underdog. The Red Wings are 13-8 against the puck line on home ice. Ottawa is 11-8-2 SU as the chalk in the betting line. The Senators are 9-12 against the puck line as an away team.
The Red Wings have lost only once in five games since Todd McLellan was replacing Derek Lalonde as head coach. During their current four-game winning streak, Detroit has allowed 2.5 goals-against per game, while scoring 4.25 goals per game. The Red Wings penalty kill, which was at the bottom of the NHL under Lalonde, is clicking at 80%.
Detroit has yet to be outshot under McLellan’s tutelage and hasn’t allowed more than 27 shots in any game. The Red Wings were outshot in 24 of 34 games with Lalonde behind the bench. The surrendered at least 30 shots in 19 of those games.
Individually, winger Patrick Kane has goals in three of the past four games. He’s accounted for 4-6-10 totals over the past 10 games. Captain Dylan Larkin has scored in three successive games after going goalless in 15 straight games. Defenseman Moritz Seider has six assists in the past five games.
Red Wings defenseman Jeff Petry (undisclosed injury) is out.
Exiled from their home arena due to the presence of the IIIHF World Junior Championship, the Senators are concluding a season-long nine-game road trip with this visit to Detroit. It began with promise. Ottawa opened the journey 3-0, part of a team-high six-game win streak.
However, Vezina Trophy-winning goalie Linus Ullmark left with an injury during the next game at Edmonton. He’s out week-to-week with a back injury. They’ve lost four of five without their all-star puckstopper. Prior to being injured, Ullmark had been on a run of 8-0-1 with a 1.43 goals-against average and .954 save percentage.
Tim Stutzle ls pacing the Senators with 12 goals and 28 assists. Shane Pinto is carrying the hot hand with five goals with two assists over the last 10 games.
This is the proverbial four-point game. Ottawa is one point out of the final Eastern Conference playoff spot, while Detroit is three points back.
While the Senators have certainly had their way with the Red Wings, Detroit is currently playing its best hockey of the season. Take the price on the Red Wings as a home underdog.
