Connor McDavid, Edmonton Oilers
McDavid is the clear cut favorite for this award and for good reason. He’s missed just two games over the past three seasons. He has won the award three times after having been nominated five times.
In fact, he was so dominant last season he only fell one vote short of unanimous selection after the highest-scoring season by a player in more than 25 years!
The Oilers captain led the league with 64 goals, 89 assists and 153 points. This was the most points scored in a season since Mario Lemieux in 1995-96. In addition to the Hart Trophy, McDavid also won the Ted Lindsay Award as the NHL’s most outstanding player as voted by his peers.
Oddsmakers have priced McDavid at +100 or even money at most sportsbooks. The implied probability of those odds are 50%.
I’m not very confident in him winning his fourth award and would not recommend betting on McDavid to win the award this season.
Nathan MacKinnon, Colorado Avalanche
MacKinnon is a talented player who’s annually among the favorites to win the award. However, he has never managed to claim it. He has played on a very good Avalanche team and that may have hurt his chances.
He’s also dealt with injury issues the past four seasons missing 47 games. MacKinnon should be a contender for the award again in 2024.
Oddsmakers have priced MacKinnon at +900 at most sportsbooks. The implied probability of those odds are 10%. This seems like a mistake by the oddsmakers.
MacKinnon is most likely going to be a finalist so at minimum his odds should provide around 20-25% chance. These odds should be around +300-+400 instead.

Auston Matthews, Toronto Maple Leafs
Matthews had a disappointing season last year considering he won the 2022 MVP. He scored 40 goals and put up 85 points. Unfortunately, a knee injury knocked him out for three weeks and McDavid was too far ahead in the race by then.
He is the new highest-paid player in the league, who just signed a four-year, $53 million contract extension in August. The deal moved him past MacKinnon as the highest paid player currently in the league.
If he can recapture the 2022 MVP form and deliver on the contract he just signed there’s no question can win the award again. +1600 odds is a fantastic value and is the ideal prop I would recommend betting on.
Jack Eichel, Vegas Golden Knights
It’s worth noting that Eichel’s career statistics indicate that he hasn’t surpassed 82 points in a full season and has never ranked higher than eighth in Hart Trophy voting. Additionally, only two players from the Golden Knights have finished in the top 10 in MVP voting throughout their history.
Nevertheless, Eichel has undergone a transformation since winning the Stanley Cup and was a strong contender for the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
As a result, he’s considered as the top player in Vegas, and if he delivers an outstanding performance this season, he could potentially be in the running for MVP.
It’s always fun to root for a longshot as well and at +5000 odds you can just take advantage of the value. Spending a few dollars to now to make a lot more later is exactly how investors think.
I would recommend betting on Eichel to win the Hart Memorial Trophy at +5000 odds.
