And there’s no question one of the main events will surely be the showdown between Green Bay and San Francisco. Leading up to this one, the Packers are the favorites over the 49ers for their matchup. There’s plenty of intrigue leading up to this one, of course with Rodgers and Garoppolo headlining things. Garoppolo has had an up and down career with the 49ers, but things are really starting to pick up for him. That much was made clear on Sunday against the Cowboys.
Going up against Dallas, San Francisco was considered a big-time underdog. The game was played at AT&T Stadium and people figured Dak Prescott and Co. would be able to get that job done. Instead, Garoppolo and the 49ers were able to shock Dallas on the road to earn the win. Garoppolo made some huge plays for the offense throughout.

On the other side of the ball, Aaron Rodgers is of course in the middle of his MVP pursuit, as he took home the honors last season. Rodgers was sharp in the regular season, and he helped Green Bay capture the No. 1 seed in the NFC and home-field advantage. Green Bay figures to cruise this weekend against the 49ers, but things could be close.
Per the best-rated online sportsbooks, the Packers are 4.5-point favorites and hold -225 NFL Las Vegas odds for the showdown. San Francisco has been set at +188. Leading up to things, people also will be wondering will the over or under hit between the Packers and 49ers? This could prove to be a defensive battle, but at the same time we think that Green Bay’s offense will be tough to contain at the same time. That’s because Rodgers really is playing out of this world right now and it’s tough to imagine that won’t continue.
For the 49ers, Garoppolo will need to do everything he can to try and make this a back-and-forth affair. While Jimmy G can make plays with his arm and is able to thread the needle, Green Bay’s defense will be jacked up to try and silence him and the rest of the offense. Things really could come down to how George Kittle performs. In the win over Dallas, Kittle was held to just one reception for 18 yards.
That simply can’t be the case against the Packers if San Francisco wants to keep things tight. Head coach Kyle Shanahan likely understands this, which is why he’ll surely need to mix things up against Green Bay. With the Packers, the bread and butter has been Rodgers throwing the ball to Davante Adams, Allen Lazard and others. That will need to keep rocking too.
According to the oddsmakers, the over-under has been placed at 47.5 points. We don’t think the Packers will have any issues scoring from start to finish, but the same can’t be said for San Francisco. Things will especially be made tough for them because of the cold temperatures at Lambeau Field. With all of this said, we’re going with the under as our pick.
Green Bay will certainly look to start things off with a bang in the Divisional Round matchup and we think they’ll get on the board to start. With that said, look for Davante Adams to score the first touchdown courtesy of a brilliant throw from Rodgers. Adams has been among the best wideouts in the game this year, which has been the case for multiple seasons.
The chemistry that he and Rodgers have is spectacular. For them to keep going like this has been amazing to see for Packers fans. Now, they’ll hope to do more of the same against the San Francisco secondary. That unit is of course going to have their hands full with the Green Bay offense as a whole, but Rodgers and Adams will complicate things even further.
While the odds haven’t been released yet, we think that Rodgers will keep going with the hot hand and feed Adams consistently to start. Will that include a great pass into the end zone for an Adams touchdown to get the Packers on the scoreboard first? We think so, as we’re going with Adams to score the opening touchdown of the GB-SF meeting as our pick.
