Now that the big game has arrived, people worldwide can’t wait to see what will end up happening between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. These two teams have plenty of star power, no question. This piece has our NFL Super Bowl MVP pick between Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes. Which star signal-caller has the advantage?
Jalen Hurts the small favorite to win Super Bowl MVP
• Super Bowl 2023: Kansas City Chiefs vs. Philadelphia Eagles • Sunday, February 12th at 6:30 p.m. ET • State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona
Thanks to his showing throughout the regular season and the playoffs, Jalen Hurts is the small favorite to win Super Bowl MVP. In the NFC Championship Game, Hurts had another strong game, showcasing his strong arm and his quick feet. The San Francisco 49ers owned the No. 1 ranked defense in the league, but they couldn’t slow down Hurts and the Eagles.
Throughout the campaign, Hurts has looked like one of the best players in the game, period. Not only that, but the Eagles have also looked like arguably the best team in the NFC, which is why they hold the top NFL Super Bowl betting odds leading up to the game against the Chiefs in less than two weeks. Plenty of people think the Eagles will win it all.
If that ends up being the case, then you better believe that Hurts is going to be a major reason why. Despite the Eagles also had stars like A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Miles Sanders, and others on offense, the entire game plan will focus on having Hurts make his brilliant plays. He’s the player who can create magic whenever he’s out on the field. The same can be said for Mahomes, though.
According to the best-rated sportsbooks, which includes the reliable Bovada review, Hurts holds +120 NFL betting odds to take home MVP honors, while Mahomes is right behind him at +125. There’s a chance someone like Brown or Travis Kelce will grab the award, but we think it will come down to one of the quarterbacks. Hurts is the favorite, but we’re going in a different direction.
Patrick Mahomes is our pick to win Super Bowl MVP
While a lot of people are getting ready to bet big on Hurts, Patrick Mahomes is our pick to win Super Bowl MVP. What Mahomes has been able to do in 2022 and the start of 2023 has been sensational for the Chiefs and he has them back in the Super Bowl for the third time in the past four seasons. Mahomes is looking to win his second Super Bowl with KC.
In the AFC Championship Game, people probably noticed Mahomes limping all over the place. He played the game with a high-ankle sprain and was clearly in a lot of pain. However, that didn’t stop him from putting on a show and out-dueling fellow quarterback Joe Burrow at Arrowhead Stadium. With the game on the line, Mahomes was able to get the job done.
“I just tried to do whatever I could to win, and obviously, there were times where you could see that it wouldn’t let me do what I wanted to,” Mahomes said after the win over Cincinnati. “But I was able to do enough on that last play to get the first down and get myself out of bounds and try to give Harrison a chance to win. We got the flag, and Ossai pushed me pretty late there.”
This will end up coming down to who ends up winning the Super Bowl. If the Eagles record the victory, Hurts will win MVP – that’s our expectation. However, despite being underdogs, we think the Kansas City Chiefs will be the ones to raise the trophy high into the sky after the final whistle. Because of this, Mahomes is our selection for MVP. While Mahomes and Hurts are the ones that are going to be most talked about, there are other MVP candidates to keep an eye on. For the Chiefs, Kelce is a guy who would be considered a ‘sleeper’ pick for you to make. One of the best tight ends of his generation, Kelce hasn’t slowed down one bit during the playoffs, and he had a nice touchdown grab against the Bengals on Sunday.
For Kansas City to record a small upset win over the Bengals, everyone knows Mahomes will need to have a big game, but Kelce will have to be a stud as well. He’s Mahomes’ favorite target, and if he could post a 100-yard game and haul in a touchdown or two, then Kelce will most certainly be in the MVP conversation if the Chiefs record a win.
As for the Eagles, another player to keep an eye on would be Brown. The star wide receiver has had a fantastic first year with the Eagles, and he’d love nothing more than to close things out with a Super Bowl. He’s another pass-catcher who could flirt with 100 yards and also score once or twice. If Brown balls out epically, then there’s no reason he can’t get MVP consideration either.
