There is a Week 0 in college football but in most cases, the real action does not begin until Week 1. The early favorite when it comes to pundits and Heisman Trophy Picks is Spencer Rattler, the quarterback from Oklahoma. His odds have been a bit all over the map from +300 on some sites to as much as +500 or even +600 on others.
Now, that being said, this is because it is so early. Most experts look to Oklahoma’s schedule and the fact that they play in the Big 12 as a significant edge. Oklahoma is likely a prohibitive favorite to win the conference crown with Rattler being a huge reason why. The Sooners’ passing offense is one of the best and in a conference where points go up like a pinball machine, his numbers should be off the charts.
Oklahoma does have to play Texas and Iowa State. Those are two of the team that gives the Sooners some trouble at times. Two years ago, those games might have been the best conference games of the year. That was then and this is now. Rattler is still only a sophomore thanks to the NCAA and their rules. This benefits the Sooners greatly.
This is where the debate for Heisman Picks begins. Naturally, their schedule helps Oklahoma and Rattler here. Rattler should get to pad his numbers heavily in September.
It is reasonable to see why Rattler is a slight favorite. The team around him combined with a reasonable schedule and not too many difficult road matchups make him an attractive pick. Plus, that early number is not too bad. Let’s be honest.
As the season begins, the Heisman Trophy odds are updated and they do not favor Bryce Young. The Crimson Tide quarterback has been listed between +700 and +1000 mostly, while some outlier sites have him as high as +1400. For perspective, Alabama and Young, like Rattler, should be able to put up some significant numbers early.
It comes down to the start. Young, like Mac Jones before him, may start a little as the lesser focus of the offense. However, as the season goes on, expect the quarterback to get more of a handle of the offense at just the right time. Like Rattler, Young reads defenses pretty well. Unlike Rattler, Young is going to face some tougher competition which could involve Florida or Georgia as well.
Alabama will face a loaded team in Texas A&M in October and then there is the Conference Championship. With a more “normalized” college football season, Young should get some better exposure via “The Iron Bowl” against Auburn as well.
For the NCAA Heisman Picks, our best bet is still Alabama to repeat this upcoming season.
Clemson expects to be a formidable player in the Heisman Trophy Picks race. They win a lot and their quarterback is typically the main reason why. Making the college playoff four of the last five seasons put the magnifying lens squarely on D.J. Uiagalelei and rightfully so. Dabo Sweeney and company made Trevor Lawrence from an awkward quarterback to a top pick with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Clemson does play Georgia and two Heisman picks face off right away. J.T. Daniels is one of the other contenders for the award but the Clemson offense and defense may be too much for the Bulldogs and Daniels. Also, consider that the Clemson quarterback showed a lot of poise last season under his mentorship and more.
The other key for Uiagalelei is easy. He just has to keep leading Clemson to victories with his arm and his legs. His arm, in particular, is underrated heavily. The fact that he is at +1200 right now seems a bit much. His odds should honestly be shorter.
Clemson often starts strong and so do their quarterbacks. It is part of why they have been in the National Championship mix since 2015. Again, their only tests are Georgia and maybe Florida State. They should have a pretty easy road compared to schools like Alabama, Oklahoma, and especially Georgia with Daniels.
Out of the challengers, D.J. Uiagalelei could be our longer shot Heisman Trophy Picks’ candidate.
Bookmakers like MyBookie seem to be going a bit shorter with their odds. Take a look at some of the players. With 17 of the last 21 Heisman winners being quarterbacks, it is very little surprise how many quarterbacks are on the list.
Even with Spencer Rattler, MyBookie offers +350 but GTBets and BetOnline are at least +500. C.J. Stroud is off the board though for Ohio State but ranges from +1100 to +1400 elsewhere.
Of course, there is. One player worth watching may be RB Bijan Robinson of Texas. Robinson can run for miles and defenses in the Big-12 are in for a long year. Robinson at +2200 is worth a look.
Take Spencer Rattler from Oklahoma to win the Heisman Trophy for this NCAA football season.
