The top turf fillies and mares take center stage on Sunday, October 8, at Woodbine Racetrack for the E. P. Taylor Stakes (G1)! In addition to being one of the classiest horse races of the season, it is also one of the most eagerly anticipated betting horse races of the year. With an international field covering a mile and a quarter on the sweeping outer turf course at Woodbine, it’s an exciting event you cannot miss!
Ten top-quality fillies and mares have been entered in the 2023 edition of the E. P. Taylor. The likely favorite is With the Moonlight, a well-proven globetrotter for trainer Charlie Appleby. However, her foes include last year’s Queen’s Plate winner Moira, recent Grade 1 winner Fev Rover, and seven other horses with the experience and class to make this an excellent betting race.

Closer to the race, Woodbine will release the morning line. Keep in mind that the morning line is not a guaranteed price. Instead, it is the track’s best estimate of what the price will look like at post-time. That can be a useful handicapping tool. But, when it comes to betting, your best bet is to play the race at an online sportsbook.
This is because online sportsbooks offer real Vegas odds on major races. You can lock those odds in just by placing your bet! Instead of leaving yourself susceptible to late swings in odds, you can watch the race confident that you got the best odds, and you know what you will get when your horse wins!

Moira is in top form coming into the E. P. Taylor. She won the local prep, the Canadian (G2), by six ¼ decisive lengths. That day she swept to the lead from toward the rear of a six-horse field, but she is versatile enough to run good efforts from closer up or further back. With that, a liking for the course, and well-proven ten-furlong stamina, she comes into this a strong win candidate.
Although Skims has that distance to close up on Moira, she has the upside to make a stronger account in this spot. The Canadian was her first race off a lay; she should be better off in her second start off a lay, as often happens with Shug McGaughey trainees. She is also a better horse now than she was the only other time she tried this distance, and she should handle the footing after some rain this week.
With the Moonlight, the Charlie Appleby shipper probably goes off the favorite. She should find a place on the board, though she is worth betting against on the winning end. She has run second in three of her four North American efforts, often at short prices. And, she has been out of action since a disappointment at Newmarket in May, making her form a question mark.
Take a shot against Fev Rover completely. She should probably be the second betting choice, and she has plenty of class for this spot. But, the mile and a quarter is longer than she prefers to go. She could possibly get this distance if allowed to steal it on the front end, but with Rocky Sky in the field, she should have enough company to be forced to work early, meaning she could run out of gas again late.
Two runners are particularly appealing to get a piece of the action at a nice price. Kalifornia Queen was third in this race two years ago and has hit the board in three of four outings at this distance category. She comes out of an allowance win last time, in which she reeled in stablemate Rocky Sky, and she should appreciate the less-than-firm footing she is likely to get in this spot.
Amazing Grace is another who should get the perfect footing after some rain in the forecast this week. She has the upside of adding Lasix for the first time, and she is consistently able to make a rally and get a piece of the exotics whether the pace in front of her is honest or sluggish. She has also never missed the board at this distance, so the turnback in the trip is a positive.

For 10 years, Rowan Ward has been handicapping and betting horses in Chicago. For almost as long, they has also been writing about horse racing. They are aware that the best handicapping approaches for a given race rely on a variety of variables, but they frequently discover that the proverb "the pace makes the race" can yield profitable betting opportunities. Local Chicago races, national stakes races, and two-year-old maiden races with intriguing pedigrees are some of their favorite events to handicap.
