The USA and Europe meet in the 2024 Solheim Cup at the Robert Trent Golf Club in Virginia. The event is the 19th edition of the competition and takes place between 13-15 September. Europe is the holder, but the USA is the betting favorite and will be determined to win the trophy back on home soil. In our latest golf betting picks, we tell you if the hosts will be successful.
What: 2024 Solheim Cup
Who: Team USA vs. Team Europe
Where: Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, Virginia, United States
When: Friday, September 13th – Sunday, September 15th
It’s less than 12 months since the two teams last contested the Solheim Cup. The 18th edition was held in 2023, with Europe retaining the trophy after a 14-14 tie in Spain.
The competition is usually biannual, but the men’s 2020 Ryder Cup was delayed by 12 months due to the global pandemic and has since remained at odd-numbered years.
So, to avoid clashing with the men’s event in the future, the Solheim Cup will now be played in even-numbered years.
Solheim Cup stats
Ahead of this year’s competition, some telling statistics need to be taken into consideration:
No team has ever won this trophy four times: Europe won the 2019 Solheim Cup in Scotland and again in Ohio in 2021. In 2023, the competition was tied at 14 points each in Spain, meaning Europe retained the Solheim Cup. If Europe lifts the cup in 2024, it will set a new record.
Europe has a poor record in the USA: Europe’s 2021 win in the USA was only their second ever on US soil. The other occasion was in 2013 when Europe thumped the USA 18-10 in Colorado. The USA has a 7-2 record at home.
USA leads the overall head-to-head: The inaugural Solheim Cup was held at the Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in Orlando in 1990. The USA won by 7 points. Overall, the USA has won ten Solheim Cups against Europe’s seven. There has been one tie. That was the 18th edition in 2023.
Well, they say that Team USA is going to regain the trophy. In the latest Solheim Cup Vegas golf odds, Team USA is -145 to win the competition outright. Europe is +135, and a tie (14-14) is +1000.
In the betting to lift the trophy, the USA is -145 and Europe is +100.
To clear things up from a betting perspective, the USA team needs to reach 14.5 points to win the Solheim Cup, no matter what. While Europe just needs 14 points to retain it.
So, a bet on Europe to win the tie at +135 would only be a winner if Europe gets 14.5 points or more. A bet on Europe to lift the trophy would only require 14 points to be a winner.
The reason why the tie works in the favor of Europe is because as the holders they keep the trophy in the event of a tie.
Stacy Lewis is the captain of the USA team. This is her second term as skipper, having previously led the team in Spain last year.
The makeup of the USA team is nine automatic qualifiers and three captain’s picks. Seven players qualified through the LPGA Solheim Cup rankings, along with the top two players in the Women’s World Golf Rankings who did not make the top seven in the Solheim Cup rankings.
The two superstars on the USA team to watch out for are Nelly Korda and Lilia Vu. They are the No. 1 and No.2 ranked golfers in the world. The duo automatically qualified alongside Lauren Coughlin, Ally Ewing, Allisen Corpuz, Megan Khang, Andrea Lee, Rose Zhang, and Alison Lee.
The three captain’s wildcard picks were Sarah Schmelzel, Jennifer Kupcho, and Lexi Thompson. Two US players are rookies, they are Coughlin and Schmelzel.
Team Europe +135
Europe has also retained the same captain from the tied cup in Malaga in 2023.
Suzann Pettersen will also be leading her team for a second time. Unlike her USA counterpart, Pettersen had four wildcard picks.
Pettersen’s team has eight automatic qualifiers – Charley Hull, Leona Maguire, Celine Boutier, Carlota Ciganda, Esther Henseleit, Maja Stark, Linn Grant, and Madelene Sagstrom.
The four wildcard picks are Albane Valenzuela, Georgia Hall, Anna Nordqvist, and Emily Pedersen.
The European team also has two rookies. They are Esther Henseleit and Albane Valenzuela.
Our 2024 Solheim Cup Betting Picks
A lot of the above statistics are pointing to a win for the USA.
Another telling factor could come in the World Rankings. The USA has three players on their team ranked inside the world’s top 10, and five of their players are ranked in the top 20.
Europe’s highest-ranked players are Celine Boutier at 10 and Charley Hull at 12. The duo are also the only two Europeans ranked inside the top 20.
As well as the rankings working in favor of the hosts, so will the atmosphere. It is set to be hostile.
Both the 2021 and 2023 events came close to boiling over. And it’s fair to say that Europe will have to face a very intimidating crowd.
Europe will also have to tame a course set up to favor the hosts from a golfing perspective.
We can only see a Solheim Cup win for the USA team.
