The 152nd British Open Championship is at Royal Troon Golf Club. Scottie Scheffler is the favorite at +450. Scheffler is the world’s No.1 golfer and has been dominating the golf circuit in 2024. Royal Troon will ask different questions of Scheffler. Is he up to the task? We give you the answers in our British Open golf betting picks.
The weather for the 2024 British Open Championship looks set to be testing. Golfers on the PGA Tour are more used to benign conditions, so with nothing to protect them from the elements at the Royal Troon Golf Club, shooting low could prove difficult.
Such conditions, found at Links courses in the UK are about the only area of Scottie Scheffler’s bulletproof game that hasn’t yet been tested. That means the +450 available on the World No.1 looks too short to go near.
There’s still a week to go until the action gets underway, so the weather forecast could yet change. But as things stand, the conditions look set to be wet and wild, making a bet on Scheffler too much of a risk.
We already know that Scottie Scheffler is the +450 favorite to win the 2024 British Open Championship with the best online golf betting sites. So who are his main betting rivals?
The second favorite is Rory McIlroy at +800. McIlroy has just blown his latest chance of winning a major, missing two short putts at Pinehurst, to hand the 2024 US Open to Bryson DeChambeau.
The loss was a devastating one for McIlroy. Has the former World No.1 recovered from that setback? Only time will tell. But at +800, Rory McIlroy also looks very short in the betting to win at Royal Troon.
Outside of the leading two in the betting are Americans Bryson DeChambeau at +1200 and Xander Schauffele at +1400. The Scandinavians are next in the betting with Ludvig Aberg at +1600 and Viktor Hovland at +1800.
Also on +1800 is Collin Morikawa. Jon Rahm is next at +2200, with Tommy Fleetwood at +2500, Brooks Koepka at +2800, and Cameron Smith, Tyrrell Hatton, and Patrick Cantley, all on +3000.

Who will shoot the lowest score of the week out of the two favorites?
Compared to Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler is untested in these conditions. The World No.1 has an average record in the three Open Championships he has played. Scheffler was T8 in 2021. He followed that up with a T21 finish in 2022 and a T23 in 2023.
His record doesn’t suggest he is an Open champion in waiting. But given his form in 2024, nothing would surprise us.
Nevertheless, if Scotland throws its worst weather at the players next week, Scheffler may struggle.
The 2024 Master champion has decided to skip the Scottish Open, a tournament many regard as the ideal warm-up for the Open.
So considering all this, we are backing Rory McIlroy to shoot a lower score than Scheffler in the head-to-head market.
Onto our 2024 British Open Championship betting picks, and if we are backing McIlroy to shoot a lower score than Scheffer, we obviously aren’t picking the World No.1 to win the tournament.
Instead, we are hedging our bets with some long shots.
Starting with the longest odds first, we are going for Shane Lowry at +3300. Lowry won the 2019 Open and has all the tools needed to win again if the elements come into play.
The Irishman has also been in good form in the majors, notably at the PGA, where he finished T6.
Next up is Tommy Fleetwood of England at +2500. Fleetwood knows how to play Links courses as well as anybody on the circuit. The Englishman is from Southport, right in the heartland of seaside-based English golf courses.
The Scottish weather can’t throw up anything Fleetwood hasn’t encountered before.
We are also backing Collin Morikawa at +1800. Morikawa is enjoying a decent 2024. He has also opted to play the Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick to acclimatize.
Finally, we are going for the major winner in waiting, Ludvig Auberg.
The Swede has never played in the Open Championship before. He only made his debut in major championships at the 2024 US Masters, where he finished second to Scottie Scheffler.
Ludvig Auberg has the game and temperament tailor-made for the big time. He may not have the experience, but anybody who follows the game closely knows it’s a case of when he wins a major, not if.
Auberg is also playing The Renaissance Club the week before the Open. He will have had a taste of Links golf and that will give him invaluable insight into what to expect at Royal Troon.
Ludvig Auberg is our final betting pick to win the 2024 British Open Championship.
