That’s right, there’s going to be a Minecraft movie dropping in Summer 2025. As you probably know, Minecraft is one of the most popular games out there — mostly on console and mostly with kids. That’s the perfect demographic to try to upsell a feature film for. Given the game’s popularity, sportsbooks have set a somewhat high over/under number for the Minecraft box office. Here’s where oddsmakers are estimating its US opening weekend gross at:
The movie is going to star names like Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Emma Myers, among others. But let’s be real, that doesn’t matter. Few movie “stars” move the needle anymore. It’s entirely about IP nowadays. This film’s success will live and die off the popularity of the game.
Welp, it’s extremely popular. In fact, the 2011 game is believed to be the top-selling single game in history. Yes, history — making it more than any single Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, or Mario title. Even though it came out in 2011, the game still has over 100 million daily active users on its servers.
For this reason, we’re slamming the over on the bet — and we mean slamming. Beyond just the current players that could be sold to watch this movie on opening weekend, there’s hundreds millions more “lapsed” fans, as in those who used to play it big may have grown out of it by now. Still, there’s a nostalgia factor involved that could bring those fans to the movie theater. These reasons are why we anticipate a blowout box-office performance from the game adaption.
We’ll admit, we had no clue this movie was even in the works. Zero clue. But it’s still an interesting bet. Here’s the current over/under on the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel:
As you can tell, the numbers are quite meager, maybe as they should be. The original movie came out in 1997. A sequel came out in 1998. By the time this movie drops in 2025, it’ll be almost 30 years ago since the first one — which feels like a millennium ago in the movie business that looks so different today than it did back then.
Not only that, but it’s not even like the original movies are that highly regarded. Yes, it was ok slash movie fodder at the time, but we personally don’t think I Know What You Did Last Summer has any cult status. Nothing like Halloween, Scream, or Friday the 13th do in the movie killer genre.
But to play to the other side, horror movies are one of the few genres still succeeding at box offices. Outside of established IPs like comic books or Star Wars, for example, people still enjoy the horror movie experience in front of the big screen over streaming services. Many of these movies end up being smash and surprise hits like Smile did.
We don’t think that’ll apply to I Know What You Did Last Summer 2 though. It’s just been way too long since the last movies in our mind. We’re solidly taking the under in this one!
Alright, enough of 2025 releases. Let’s cover a 2024 release that you’ll be able to make money off in the next couple of weeks. Wicked is releasing November 27, 2024 during Thanksgiving weekend. That’s usually a big movie-going season, which explains the high over/under mark:
Universal moved up the release date. It was originally slotted for Christmas time, which would’ve competed with Avatar 3 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Instead, Wicked will have much easier battle going against Gladiator 2 during Thanksgiving.
Some details about the movie itself: it’s based on the Broadway musical of the same name. That musical is based on a book series. However, the source material all stems from the Wizards of Oz, one of the most well-known character series of all time.
The original theater play was a monster success. After three years of tours around the world, Wicked crossed the $1 billion gross mark. At the time, only the Lion King and The Phantom of the Opera had accomplished the same feat.
We fully expect that success to carry over into the big screen. The movie stars Arianna Grande, the superstar musician and actress who has laid low as of late. Still, she’s a hitmaker and we expect Wicked to end up as one of the biggest grosses of 2024 due to its family-friendly story and holiday release time. Hit the over in this one!
These days, there are Las Vegas-style odds for anything and everything outside of sports. But here’s the thing: things like that can only be bet on at offshore sportsbooks, not regulated ones. We’ve listed our favorite sites to bet on movie box-office results below. Any one of these will offer the full range of bets, even beyond the ones we covered above.
