What year is this? That’s undoubtedly what boxing fans across the globe are thinking after it was announced that ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson and Lennon Lewis will meet inside the ring in September. Despite the two being long retired, we’ll still get to see quite the exhibition match. In this piece, we have our Mike Tyson vs. Lennox Lewis futures picks. Who will come out on top?
Mike Tyson is the early favorite facing off against Lennox Lewis
Despite the fight being in the fall, Mike Tyson is the early favorite facing off against Lennox Lewis. Lewis has been retired from boxing since 2003, as his last fight came against Vitali Klitschko. The two went toe-to-toe in one hell of a showdown, with Lewis coming out on top in the end. He hasn’t put on the gloves ever since, which adds to the intrigue here.
As for Tyson, he came out of retirement this past November for a match with Roy Jones Jr. It was his first action since 2005. That fight was quite entertaining, with things ending in a draw. Countless folks thought that Tyson got robbed there, though, and were hoping he’d be named the victor. That unfortunately wasn’t the case.
Now, Tyson will look to remind everyone just how powerful he is when him and Lewis meet. Remember, though, Lewis has quite the height advantage and was known in his prime as being one of the best boxers in the world. The same could be said for ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson.
The original boxing odds have been released, with Tyson being the favorite at -160, while Lewis is checking in at +120 per the Vegas sportsbooks. This one really could go either way, but we’re going with Tyson as our pick here. The fact that he was able to get his feet wet back in action against Jones Jr. could prove to be the difference. We’re going with Tyson.
Will the Tyson-Lewis fight end in a knockout?
Once the bout does roll around, everyone will want to know will the Tyson-Lewis fight end in a knockout? Despite the two climbing in age, there’s no question they’ve still got great bodies and their form should still be outstanding. Because of their power, we 100 percent believe someone will end up winning by TKO.
With Tyson as our pick to win the fight, this is how we think he’ll end up winning. One key thing to remember is that Lewis is 55 and Tyson is 54. Again, these guys are in incredible shape for their ages, but they’re not in their 20s or 30s anymore. They’re going to get tired and sluggish much earlier than expected. This could open the door for mistakes to be made.
Say in the fourth round, Lewis is winded and Tyson catches him with a perfect punch across the jaw. If Lewis ends up going down, it’s going to be so much tougher for him to try and bounce back up compared to when he was in the best days of his career. Also, if Lewis catches Tyson, he’d also have so much trouble getting back to his feet before the 10 seconds are up.
This really is something to consider before making your bets. The odds for whether or not the fight will end in a knockout are yet to be released, but it’s hard to imagine things not being finalized with a TKO. That’s our pick in this case, as someone will undoubtedly land a flurry of big punches to send their opponent to the floor.
Lennox Lewis has the confidence of previously beating Tyson
Despite Iron Mike being the favorite, Lennox Lewis has the confidence of previously beating Tyson in a fight. The two heavyweights met back in 2003, with Lewis taking down Iron Mike via and eight-round TKO. It was one of the more highly-anticipated fights in a while, with Lewis stepping up and defeating Tyson with the knockout seen around the world.
This was back when the two were elite boxers. This exhibition match they have planned is more for just show and won’t have any serious belts on the line. However, you know that both Lewis and Tyson will have pride on their minds. You really think either of them wants to have a loss hanging over their heads? Yeah, they might be in their 50s, but the hunger of a boxer never leaves them.
For Lewis, he knows that he’s already been able to not only beat Tyson but knock him out as well. Come September, he’ll look to record and upset and do so in an entertaining fashion. Only time will tell if he’ll be able to get that job done, or if Tyson will be able to take care of business.
