Ryan vs Mayer bets lean toward the more scrappy Ryan. The key in this bout simply boils down to the assertiveness of Ryan. Her form is better over the last five fights (4-0-1). The draw, could be argued, as a win given some dubious scoring. Either way, the Derbyshire, England native has a one inch height and reach advantage over Mikaela Mayer.
Both pugilists are right around 147 pounds and are capable of knocking down their opponent. Ryan has three knockouts as a professional and quite a few knockdowns. Mayer has five but lately has relied more on decisions. The English (WBO Champion) pugilist bullied Terri Harper into retirement earlier this year. In contrast, Mayer lost a controversial split decision against Natasha Jonas.
The previous bouts for the younger Ryan seem to indicate there is a bit more in her tank. Mayer did show she has something left against Jonas. Yes, the American got in more power shots and this fight could have much the same tempo. Can Ryan get the more significant shots in first and dodge the Mayer counter? It is something Jonas failed too often at and arguably got lucky.
Anyway, we mentioned that movement. Well, Ryan was a -150 to -175 favorite on the Moneyline. Experts and bettors alike have seen that drop into the -125 to -130 range for the Englishwoman to retain her belts.
This bout displays two relatively similar forward styles. Naturally, there remains an even more forward attack for Ryan. She can cause some considerable damage with both hands. The same can be said for Mayer. However, the age difference has to be noted along with pedigree. So, the Ryan vs Mayer Bets expect another action-packed ladies fight. Could we see another close Ryan decision?
Many chuckled at that 8.5 Round prop for this fight. This is a rightful assertion as most books range the Over at -725 to -755 with an Under above +400. Again, the championship fight is a 10-round bout. Both fighters have shown the stamina to go the distance. Ryan, in particular, looked like she could go 12 or 15 rounds in her previous fight (the retirement of Terri Harper).
Boxing experts feel that Ryan can come into New York and come out with a win over the Colorado native. The expectation is that Ryan (31) has enough in the championship rounds to keep Mayer (34) at bay. This will be Ryan’s biggest test. Yes, there lies little doubt in that. If anyone believes in Ryan enough, the decision payout has crossed into positive territory. It was not there at the open.
Some suggest the round props could be an option. If there was to be a knockout here, it would be in Rounds 9 or 10. However, the chances of this occurring are pretty remote. Mayer did seem vulnerable to someone who had power. The belief is that Ryan has a bit more variety with her power shots than Jonas did. We have Ryan by decision.
Ryan vs Mayer bets ask can Mayer finish a fight off? So, the concern with Mayer here is valid. There were large stretches of the Jonas fight where the Mayer counter combinations had Jonas on the ropes. Yet, every single time, it seemed Mayer let the IBF Champion off the hook. That opened up the decision on the scorecards. Again, the split decision can be debated. However, if Mayer had finished off a few rounds better, she wins.
Okay, Mayer has a slight reach and height disadvantage. One inch either way is pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Now, the last 30 to 40 seconds of each round will be vital. Can the American make enough of an impression to sway judges or will Ryan steal a few of those close ones? Mayer’s two split decision losses were a product of losing rounds late.
Alas, the attack plan is key for Mayer. Do not get tagged too often by Ryan’s combination power. Occasionally, Mayer needs to counter less and be a bit more aggressive. That carries risk but in order to win this bout, she will have to initiate more. If she can do that and end rounds well, she can once again become champion.
Are there any other props? With Vegas online boxing odds at the ready, there seems to be something for everyone. After all, the longer shot knockout in Rounds 9 or 10 come in at +500 and +750 respectively. Watch to see what opens up for split and unanimous decisions.
Anyway, the money may just be on another split decision not going Mayer’s way.
