Europe and the USA meet in the 2023 Ryder Cup this week, and here we look ahead to the event in our latest golf betting picks. The USA are defending the trophy and are the betting favorites to win again. If they manage to win, it will be the first time they’ve won on European soil since 1993.
This is the 44th Ryder Cup and is the first time in history that Rome has ever staged the event. The Marco Simone Golf and Country Club is the venue. The course is par 71 and 7,268 yards in length. The course will likely be set up to handicap the Americans who are more used to playing on the wider fairways found on the PGA Tour.
Going against the USA is history. They haven’t won in Europe since 1993. 30 years is a long time, and the USA will have the added pressure of trying to end that drought. But will that pressure transfer onto the shoulders of the European team? As much as there is pressure on the USA to win, there is arguably more pressure on the European’s to defend the record.
The latest Ryder Cup odds see the USA as the -105 favorite to win the Ryder Cup outright. Europe is +115, with the tie at +1100. In the handicap market, Europe is -115 with a half-point start. The USA is -105 to cover the spread.
In the betting to lift the trophy, the best online golf betting sites make the USA their -144 favorites. Europe – who would need a minimum of 14.5 points for this bet to win – are the underdogs at +120.

Europe are looking for revenge after their 19-9 mauling at Whistling Straits in 2021. The youngest side ever fielded by the USA simply blew the Europeans away.
This time round the specter of LIV Golf looms large over this Ryder Cup for Europe. Plenty of household names who joined the breakaway tour were deemed ineligible to play for Europe in the showpiece event.
In fairness to the European team, Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, and Lee Westwood may not have made this Ryder Cup. Time was beginning to catch the three veterans up.
Europe is captained by Luke Donald, who replaced Henrik Stenson after the Swede was removed from the role for signing with LIV Golf. The six players who automatically qualified to represent Europe are Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Robert MacIntyre, Viktor Hovland, Tyrrell Hatton, and Matt Fitzpatrick.
They were joined by the six captain’s picks; Tommy Fleetwood, Sepp Straka, Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, Nicolai Højgaard, and Ludvig Åberg. The European side has three rookies, Straka, Højgaard, and Åberg.
USA Captain Zach Johnson named Sam Burns, Rickie Fowler, Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, and Justin Thomas as his six picks. They join Patrick Cantlay, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Max Homa, Xander Schauffele, and Scottie Scheffler in completing the US playing 12. The US has four rookies on its team. They are Clark, Harman, Homa, and Burns.
This team doesn’t have quite the same aura about it as the one from Whistling Straits in 2021. That side has been decimated by the defections to LIV Golf.
Similar to the Europeans, some of the players missing this time around were coming to the end of their Ryder Cup careers. But it does feel that the US team has been harder hit than their European counterparts.
That said, as the inclusion of Brooks Koepka has shown, Zach Johnson was prepared to pick players from the (now former) renegade tour but chose not to.
But Kopeka’s inclusion could be down to the fact that as the winner of the PGA Championship, he had an automatic place on the team based on ranking points, right up until he dropped out of the top six on the final day of the last qualifying event. Johnson would have already planned his team with Kopeka in it. And this could have been the main reason behind his wild card selection.
This has to be the time for a US victory on European soil. Surely? The visitors have the stronger-looking team, and although they’ve been harder hit than Europe with the players not selected because of LIV Golf, we still feel they will have too much for the hosts.
We expect this to be a close matchup. And that could be Europe’s best chance of victory. If they have a Rahm or a McIlroy playing in the deciding match on Sunday afternoon, then Europe could well win.
But the chances are that it won’t get that far. If the Europeans find themselves behind going into the final day, they will send their big guns out first to try and take the competition deep and provide a shift in momentum. We feel that will ultimately play into the hands of the USA team.
This is the USA team’s best chance in years to win in Europe. We don’t see them blowing this, and we make the USA our pick to win the 2023 Ryder Cup.
In light of what happened in the Solheim Cup, and if you wish to play safe, a bet on the USA to lift the trophy is -144. This would cover a win for the USA and a 14-14 tie. Alternatively, a tie is +1100 and may be worth a small side bet.
