All the big stars of golf are assembling in New York this week for the second major championship of the year. Yes, it’s time for the 2023 PGA Championship, with the action coming from the Oak Hill Country Club. Justin Thomas is the defending champion. But will he cut for our players to watch in our golf betting picks? Read on to find out more.
What; US PGA Championship
Where; Oak Hill East Course, Oak Hill Country Club, Pittsford, New York
When; Thursday, May 18th – Sunday, May 21st
Par; 70
Yards; 7,394
The East Course at Oak Hill has previously staged the Ryder Cup, the PGA Championship, and the US Open. But the course has been restructured in recent years, making it practically brand new, with nothing but the name remaining consistent.
In an attempt to recreate the original course designed by Donald Ross, Andrew Green has removed more than 600 trees and has made changes to all 18 greens. As a result, we can no longer use the previous form at this venue to help us pick a winner for this year’s competition.
But what we do know is the revamped course is going to test the players. Low scoring isn’t expected. The winner will probably be the most patient guy who makes the least mistakes—the guy who drives accurately and hits the most greens in regulation.
Who is the favorite to win the 2023 US PGA Championship?
We have joint favorites to win the 2023 US PGA Championship. World No.1 and No.2, Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler are both +800 to win in the latest PGA Championship betting odds.
Following behind the two leaders is Rory McIlroy. McIlroy is down at +1400, which is quite a significant gap in the odds. Especially when you consider how closely matched the trio has been in recent months. McIlroy has had some well-documented problems in recent months and has only played in one event since missing the cut at the Masters.
Behind McIlroy is Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantley, who are both +1600. Then we have the first LIV golfer, Brooks Koepka at +2200, which is also the same odds as the in-form Tony Finau. Last year’s PGA winner, Justin Thomas is next at +2800.
Right, now, it’s time to reveal who our players are to follow this week. First up, should we read anything into the stat that nine of the last 12 winners of this competition have been in their 20s? Maybe it is a factor. But the fact that this event isn’t played on the same course yearly may slightly negate that stat.
But the stat tells us that this event may be held on more stamina sapping courses that suit the youngsters. So with that in mind, we’re starting off with the 28-year-old Matt Fitzpatrick.
The Englishman looks overpriced at +3500 with the best Las Vegas sportsbooks. He won the recent RBC Heritage tournament, and with a major championship win under his belt from last year, he knows how to win the big events.
In the 2022 US Open, Fitzpatrick won with a score of -6. But when you consider that only eight players finished under par, and inside those eight were Scheffler (-5), Zalatoris (-5), and McIlroy (-3), you start to realize just how good a championship win that was.
At +3500, Matt Fitzpatrick is our first pick to win.
Following Fitzpatrick, we will look at form ahead of age and go for 33-year-old Tony Finau. Finau is also in decent nick, having just won the Mexico Championship, where he had to hold off a challenge from the World No.1, Jon Rahm, to win by one stroke.
Apart from that win, Finau’s form has been steady if not spectacular. He hasn’t missed a cut since November 2022, and as a result of his consistency, he is now up to 11th in the world rankings. Because of this, we’re happy to back Tony Finau to win at +2200.
Finally, let’s pick a long-priced outsider to get behind this week. Names like Si Woo Kim, Patrick Reed, and Talor Gooch are all +10000. But one name that stands out in this price bracket is that of Justin Rose at +11000.
In recent weeks, Rose has finished T6 in the Players Championship, T36 at the Valspar, T16 at the Masters, and T25 at the RBC Heritage. The last cut he missed was at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in early March.
You might think that’s not a form that demands to be backed, and that would be fair enough. But what his recent stats do tell us is that he’s in decent form. And with a T6 at the Players and a T16 at Augusta, Rose is on the leaderboards at recent big events.
At odds of +11000, he’s well worth a small bet to win. Alternatively, he’s +900 to finish in the top ten.
