Newcastle vs Tottenham – 2022-23 Premier League season
Sunday, April 23rd
St. James’ Park, Newcastle, UK
Sunday brings an absolutely massive Premier League clash between two clubs chasing a Champions League spot as third-place Newcastle welcomes fourth-place Tottenham to St. James’ Park, who sit just three points behind them. The kick-off is scheduled for 9 AM ET. The Magpies won the verse fixture in North London in October by a score of 2-1 thanks to goals from Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron. Keep reading for the Newcastle vs Tottenham picks.
Newcastle is a rather heavy favorite here with moneyline odds of -125 at Bovada online sportsbook. They’ve only tasted defeat once in Premier League play at home this term. The spurs come back at +320 and haven’t won in their last four away games. The over 2.5 goals at -121 odds are also something to keep an eye on, considering it’s been hit in four straight meetings between the two sides.
Match Preview
The Magpies have truly turned things around quickly since new ownership from Saudi Arabia took over. While Eddie Howe’s squad isn’t full of star talent by any means, they play extremely well together and have a legitimate chance to play Champions League football in 2023-24 for the first time since 2003. At the very least, Europa appears to be a reality.
The Toon are currently occupying fourth with a 15-11-4 record, drawing more than every other club in the top flight other than Brentford. They had collected five consecutive victories before succumbing to a brutal 3-0 defeat last weekend at Aston Villa but thankfully, it didn’t hurt Newcastle too much since Tottenham was also shocked by Bournemouth. If the Magpies can snatch three points Sunday, it would be their first league double over Spurs since 2015-16.
Tottenham might still have the opportunity to make Europe’s most prized competition, but it’s been a rather disappointing campaign. Antonio Conte and the club mutually parted ways after the Italian ripped into his players publicly to the media, and although injuries are certainly playing a part in their struggles, Spurs just simply aren’t playing up to par.
The North Londoners dropped another crucial three points last time out in a game where they frankly should’ve won as Bournemouth beat them 3-2. This fixture truly went back and forth as the two exchanged blows, but the Cherries ultimately scored a winner at the death in injury time.
As previously mentioned, Tottenham could’ve gained crucial ground on Newcastle with a victory but failed to come through. Now, they have to do it the hard way and beat the Magpies on their home turf. Tottenham has actually gone unbeaten in the previous five visits to St James’, notching four wins and settling for a draw. That’s good news at least.
Newcastle vs Tottenham Picks
I really love how the Magpies are playing in general and especially at home. You can expect both teams to be fired up to bounce back after defeats, but I give Newcastle the advantage.
