The 2020 WNBA Draft is set to arrive on Friday, April 17 and there’s plenty of excitement surrounding the league. So, who will be the top WNBA Draft 2020 picks? We break that down in this piece.
If you’ve been following college basketball in recent years, you already know who the No. 1 overall pick will be later this week when it comes to WNBA Draft Picks. Yup, we’re talking about the one and only Sabrina Ionescu, who has 1.01 odds (-10000) to hear her name called first. The Oregon guard is without question the best player in the upcoming draft, as she’s a truly generational talent.
The superstar became the first player (either male or female) in college basketball history to record 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 1,000 assists. Are you kidding? There’s a reason she was the Pac-12 Player of the Year three consecutive seasons and was the 2019-20 unanimous National Player of the Year.
With the New York Liberty holding the top spot in the draft, they’re taking her. There’s no scenario where the team from the Big Apple passes on her or trades away the pick. Pack your bags for New York City, Sabrina.
While Ionescu will be going No. 1 overall, it’s widely expected that either Satou Sabally or Lauren Cox will be going to the Dallas Wings with the No. 2 selection. Similar to Ionescu, Sabally was a standout for the Ducks during her time in Eugene. Sabally checks in at 6-4 and is a problem for anyone trying to get in her way.
This past season, Sabally was named the Cheryl Miller Award Winner (given to the nation’s top small forward) after she posted 16.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. She was named to the AP’s Second Team All-America list. She is only a junior but is forgoing her senior campaign to turn pro. Look for Dallas to go with her.
If they don’t, Cox will be there for the taking. Out of Baylor, Cox with a First-Team All-American after a splendid senior season. The 6-4 forward/center averaged 12.5 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per outing this winter. If Cox is still available at No. 3, there’s little doubt the Indiana Fever will make the pick.
While the Top 3 picks seem like a virtual lock, there’s still plenty of movement expected among the rest of the Top 10 and beyond for the WNBA Draft Picks 2020. Names to keep an eye on including Chennedy Carter, Crystal Dangerfield, Megan Walker, Bella Alarie, Tyasha Harris, Te’a Cooper, Beatrice Mompremier, Ruthy Hebard, Mikiah Herbert Harrigan, and others.
