Tadej Pogacar faces a huge uphill climb for yellow this week. The first week of the Tour de France showed little signs of change from the previous two races. Pogacar was a beast gaining seconds wherever he could. By Stage 11, Pogacar had amassed a 39 second lead over Jonas Vingegaard and had kind of displaced most of his other rivals. All looked quite good and the signs of a third straight victory were on taps.
After a time trial triumph in 2020 and a much easier defending of his crown, no one could have seen what was to occur on Stage 11. There were three mountain climbs including two “beyond category” jaunts. Between the Col du Galibier and Col du Granon, the tides of the Tour shifted and shifted dramatically. At one point, these riders go well over 8,000 feet up in elevation.
Some pundits felt the 2022 race would be a good deal closer. Pogacar is not completely out of this. Mind you, he can erase some time on these mountains in the South of France and Spain. Maybe his legs just were gone on the final five kilometers of Stage 11. He lost nearly three minutes of time to Vingegaard but is there a chance the Slovenian could get those back?

Stage 11 was the crown jewel of this attacking strategy where Vingegaard stormed past everyone to win that mountain stage going away. By doing that, he blew away the competition and established a 142 second lead on Tadej Pogacar. That lead has stayed until this final week.
The concerns with Vingegaard are valid at this juncture as no one honestly knows how he will bounce back from the several “stumbles” during Stage 15 on Sunday. After all, this was a routine 200 kilometer flat stage. Yes, there is heat but no one expects these lapses. However, something about Jumbo Visma just indicates nothing ever comes easy. With Steven Kruijswijk and Primoz Roglic now out after Sunday, suddenly the Tour changes some.
The war of attrition between the two teams is something else with UAE and Jumbo. So, the dilemma with picks here is this. The Danish cyclist is still such a big favorite as of now. This could change dramatically between Monday and say Wednesday. With three mountainous stages including the Hautacam and the Saturday time trial, picking Jonas Vingegaard is not a foregone conclusion here at the Tour de France.
Again, there are some other jerseys to take a look at for this year’s Tour de France. Let’s have some fun with the bets and the potential upset. Can again Jonas Vingegaard battle the nerves and a slightly depleted team to hold off Tadej Pogacar?
With so many summit finishes and climbs, taking a shot with Pogacar at this plus-money is worth the risk. If the Slovenian bounces back in great form in this third week, can he leave the Dane in his dust? That is something Pogacar can do but has not done yet at this Tour.

The problem is he cannot time trial well. Vingegaard and Pogacar can on this 40 kilometer Stage 20. Bardet would need minutes and that is a problem.
Pogacar is still a slight green jersey (Wout Van Aert wins) bet at well over +3000 but not too likely. Again, yellow jersey value for him has been as high as +350. Shop around.
