The quest for the 109th Grey Cup begins June 9th and this season will feature a full 18-game campaign. Last year was just 14. Winnipeg (+300) and Saskatchewan (+450) battled long and hard for the division and then for the championship as Winnipeg found a way to repeat in a stirring overtime victory. That gave the Blue Bombers two Grey Cup triumphs in a row. Inevitably, they are favorites to win a third, err three-peat.
Now, Saskatchewan stands as the team most likely to be in their way come the regular and second seasons. The Rough Riders went 9-5 last year in the shortened season and have gotten closer than ever to supplanting Winnipeg. There is no surprise why both of these teams top the 2022 CFL Futures Bets. However, they are not necessarily our main focus.
So, with the pre-season underway, the idea is to examine some of the other teams that could perhaps make some noise in the CFL this year. As teams round into shape, do not pay too much into preseason results. This is more about players getting back in shape after a long offseason.
Now, 2022 CFL Futures Bets focuses on the following question. Could Hamilton and Calgary be two of those teams that cause the script to be flipped?
Some will forget that the Hamilton Tiger-Cats had a decent season in 2021. They went 8-6 and enjoyed one of the better point differentials as well (+68). That was second only to Winnipeg last year (who led the CFL at +173). The Tiger-Cats improved defensively and some have debated already that their offence could improve too. It lends credence to the belief that Hamilton could rise this 2022 CFL Season.
So the Tiger-Cats are one of those teams that could benefit from four extra games on the schedule. Hamilton has made the last two Grey Cups falling to Winnipeg in 2019 and 2021. Orlando Steinauer believes this Hamilton squad is a second-half team. That was the case last year as well. Hamilton almost caught Toronto for the East Division and then made another good run in the playoffs culminating with a second East Division win.
This bodes well for a team like Hamilton. The Tiger-Cats are not one of those teams that get complacent. With fierce training camp battles ongoing and the signing of a new kicker, they are determined more than ever to dethrone Winnipeg. There is this funny concept in the numbers that put them just third in the pecking order to the Blue Bombers and Rough Riders. That means the value is in the Tiger-Cats’ corner for now.
Hamilton did go 5-2 at home last year and the belief is they could win seven or eight of their nine contests this year. If the Ti-Cats are anywhere near .500 on the road (3-4 last year), they should easily win 10 or 11 games. When the offense is clicking, they are extremely tough to beat. However, the song likely remains the same from a win and loss standpoint as the Hamilton number remains one of the 2022 CFL Futures Bets worth wagering on.
2022 CFL Futures Bets for the Calgary Stampeders and Bo Levi Mitchell carry a few more question marks. Unlike the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and their closeness to ending “the drought”, Calgary faces a different pressure. That falls squarely on the shoulders of the 32-year-old signal-caller. He never has had to face doubts about his play even if most of that was due to injuries.
Sadly, Calgary was not that bad last year. They did go 8-6 on the season. The Stampeders were closer than most thought but again, Levi Mitchell was just not the same quarterback. They lost in overtime in the first round of the playoffs to Saskatchewan. The two-time Grey Cup-winning quarterback threw 13 interceptions compared to just ten touchdowns. It was the first year he did that and doubts crept into his mind.
What many may forget is the 2018 season Mitchell is not as long off as pundits think. 2019 saw the signal-caller in good form until that first injury hit. Then, things began to spiral. 2020 did not help with COVID cancelling the entire season. That thew everything off. 2022 is the season for Mitchell. This is it. It is his crossroads as a quarterback. Either he bounces back, or the veteran hangs them up.
For the 2022 CFL Futures Bets, our pick is to choose the Calgary Stampeders and the re-emergence of Bo Levi Mitchell. He has weapons all around him and at +650, the numbers seem to be sleeping on this team. That may be right where Calgary wants everyone.
